Shooting baseballs

There was a thread started here a little while back asking "what's the farthest distance you could shoot a baseball and hit it 9 out of 10 times? Well I posted 340 yards since I have been successful at hitting golf balls at that distance 2 out of 10 and my missed shots were very close.

I finally got a chance to try it out today. I started out at 200 yards as my Rem 700 ADL Varmint .223 is zeroed at that distance with Hornady .223 SP. Today I shot my reloads, 55 gr V-max with 27.4 gr BLC pushing the bullet to about 3200 fps. A few shots to get zeroed and I was ready. First shot was a hit and the next and the next after that. Perfect 10 for 10 at 200 yards. One shot was a grazing shot but hey I considered it a hit. The baseball looked pretty rough. :D

Then I moved on to 340 yards. Using the Nikon spot on program, I adjusted my scope 14 clicks up. My first shot was on the money. My next one was a miss and so was the next one. The end result was 3 for 10. :(
You can see the missed shots around the ball.

Here's my set up. Rem 700 ADL with 4-12x40 Redfield Revolution with Accu Range Reticle on a Caldwell pivoting bipod.

I guess I'm not as good as a shot as I thought. But hey it was fun trying it.
Next time I will slow down a bit and take my time. Maybe I will do a little better.:)

Jimbob - I'd like to get the 340 yard distance down, then my next move would be from prone with bipod. When I get that down, then maybe prone off sandbags.

ottojara - I had to pick up a couple of cheap ones from Dicks. All I had was softballs which are much bigger.

I'm always looking on here for new ways to keep shooting fun. This was definitely a nice challenge.

Prone with bipod and sandbag supported positions measure how consistantly the gun and load shoot.......

I'm not saying I can do that ...... I'm doing good to hit a milk jug at that distance, consistantly..... and the wind better not be blowing........ and I better be on my shooting sticks, too...... but that is a practical test, as I carry those sticks with me when I hunt.

Jimbob - I get what you mean. I also practice other shooting stances with my other rifles. With the varmint barrel on this rifle, it's pretty hard to shoot offhand. I'd prefer to use my Tikka Lite or X-bolt for that type of shooting. Althhough a baseball at that distance would be mighty hard. I'll start with the big gong at my range and see how that goes. Thanks.

People used to have egg shooting competitions, but I haven't heard anything about them lately. I think they shot at 200 yards and each had 5 eggs to shoot. That must be fun too, though messy.

Oh man, there goes another idea. I'll have to ask my club to see if it's allowed as the mess might attract animals on to the range.

It would be fun to shoot them with a .22 and iron sights.:D

Wait a few months, and get a mess of plastic Easter eggs. You may even be able to get them now if you have a party supply store in your area: http://www.partyamerica.com/product...+easter+eggs+10ct.do?sortby=ourPicks&size=all

Dirt cheap, no mess, and you can fill them with something to make the hits more interesting. Flour, maybe? Tannerite? :D

Plastic easter eggs, brilliant! Flour filled would make a good cloud with centerfire ammo. So many possibilities of things to put inside. :D

My wife's extended family has a tradition of dyeing real Easter eggs ...... it's a big family, and they typically do 10 to 12 dozen..... and almost nobody eats boiled eggs ..... I do, but jeeminy, egg salad does get old, day after day..... so we have an Easter eggs massacre every Easter...... bulk .22lr hollow poits do a fine job on brightly colored boiled eggs! It is amazing how fast 3 to 5 kids with single shot .22's can burn through a brick of ammo and 100 or so eggs ........
