Shooting area

I have a 7 acre plot of land I would like to use for target practice. Is this an adequate amount of space for this? There is another house about 500ft to the right of me but clear sailing behind us. Thanks for your thoughts!

7 acres isn't that much when talking about firearms. Build a decent backstop. Check your local ordinances concerning the firing of weapons. Build a decent backstop. A bullet will not suddenly stop when it reaches the edge of your property. Build a decent backstop. If you live in a wooded area, don't be fooled into thinking it's okay to shoot into those woods. Oh, did I mention build a decent backstop?

OP, while yes 7 acres isnt that big when speaking of ranges. I know several people that safely shoot on less. I will make some suggestions.

1. Check for the legalities in your area.

2. Speak to the owner of the property, behind yours, in the direction you want to shoot, also speak to those along the sides to learn of any objections. I also would make sure there are no houses directly behind your target area.

3. Build a berm. Or at the least a "Bullet Box." When I say "Bullet Box" I mean a 3 walled box built out of railroad ties or similar material, with loose dirt or sand pilled against the back wall. Needs to be 8-10 foot high. The higher the better.

4. While we all would love to shoot at home, take a reality check and ensure its legal, safe and is once again, "safe". I say it twice just to help you keep it in mind. Also if you know someone that has built a range before, ask them to come over and see what their thoughts are. I say that because we all get ideas at times and its good to have a fresh look from an uninvolved person.
