SYDNEY –- American Kim Rhode, who as a teenager
claimed a gold medal at the Atlanta Games in women’s double trap, won the
bronze this time around Tuesday at the Sydney International Shooting
Centre.

Sweden’s Pia Hansen, the 1999 World Championship
silver medalist, used an Olympic record total of 112 in the first three
rounds to take the gold. Italy’s
Deborah Gelisio rode the strength of a 37 of 40
on the final round –- the best score of any finalist -- to claim silver.

Rhode was well entrenched in third place heading
into the finals, trailing Gelisio by four
points. And there was a ray of hope. The Italian
had faltered badly in the third round, hitting
just 32 targets.

However, on the final round, Gelisio’s 37 proved
to be too much as Rhode scored a 36.

“I am very happy to come away with a medal,” said
Rhode. “But she (Hansen) shot well, she
was awesome today.”

When asked if she would be back for the 2004
Games, Rhode said, “I’d love to.”
