Shooting accident leaves cop-in-training dead

The Associated Press

SARASOTA, Fla. (September 12, 2000 5:35 p.m. EDT http://www.nandotimes.com) - A paramedic training to become a police officer died Tuesday after being shot in the head during a training exercise.

Michael Yahraus, a 32-year-old father of three, was wounded Monday during an exercise involving a gun modified for training, the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office said.

Yahraus was playing the part of a police officer making a traffic stop, facing an instructor wielding a .38-caliber weapon loaded with blanks, its barrel plugged.

Sheriff's officials said the gun discharged and the plug was ejected, hitting Yahraus in the left eye after it ricocheted off a window.

The instructor was placed on routine leave while the department investigates. Ballistic tests are also being conducted, and the department is inspecting all weapons used in the exercise.

Why not just make sure the gun has blanks in it in the first place, why plug? Remember that test they did on HKUSP 45 where they purposefully lodged a bullet in the barrel and shot it out with the next one, and then kept shooting. All it did is bulge the barrel the gun kept working.Sorry to hear this.

This reminded me of time my buddy hkg3 got a slug lodged in the barrel of his redhawk and when we got to my house we loaded up a blank [so to speak] and tried to shoot it out but it did nothing. Eventully we used a wooden dowl.

Sad.

I suppose there will an outcry to disallow police officers to have guns now...

NRA? Good. Now join the GOA!

The NRA is our shield, the GOA will be our sword.

I suppose this could be partially attribuated to the fact that most departments now use semi-autos as opposed to revolvers.
Granted it was a very long time ago but during my training days we used blanks loaded with cotton in M&P Smith's. I still vividly remeber a training exercise in which I was shot from a distance of only a few inches with one of these cotton ball blanks in the face. I was wearing the required safety goggles and only received powder burns around the goggles. The greatest injury was to my ego for having failed an exercise that would have left me dead on the street.
I can only imagine the pain the instructor must be feeling right now. My sympathies to all those involved.

Because a primer isnt as loud as a blank.
This is sad - and truely an accident. It bounced off a WINDOW and then killed the officer?!?! Basically - it was his time.
If that didn't kill him a falling part off a 747 would have hit him.

Shame.

IIRC, this is a similar to how Brandon Lee was killed on the set of "The Crow". Instead of a plug, it was a bullet lodged in the barrel.

I have used similarly modified revolvers. The muzzle is plugged and there are ports drilled into the barrel along the sides to vent the gasses and diffuse them. They are still dangerous and should not be used up close.

If you are careful and something bad happens, the odds of someone getting hurt are greater than someone being killed as long as your carefullness was thorough in its design.

A number of years ago an Training Office here in OKC was kill in a similar accident. They were using blanks in a standard weapon and it got jammed hard into his belly and the trigger pulled. The wadding and burnt powder ruptured his insides. He took a couple of days to die. A sad thing to happen.
