Shooting 357s all day, OK?

I was reading somewhere some people were recommending shooting mostly 38sp and sometimes 357's in their L-frames so as not to beat up their guns. Got me kinda nervous since I like shooting 357's (more fun) and I just got my N-frame 627PC. Should I shoot mostly 38sp? Thanks.

I think someone told you wrong. Its the K frames that won't

take as much magnum firing as the others (but still quite a lot).

In the 60's and early seventies people were training with 38's

and loading 357's for the street. Sometime in the early 70's

people began training with their duty ammo more and more and

the K frames started breaking down.

The L frame was introduced for people who wanted to shoot

mostly magnums and who shot a lot. Your N frame being even

heavier duty should be no problem whatsoever.

Tman,

That L-frame was designed for Magnum loads. Shoot them if you have them. The only thing you have to worry about is around 60,000 rounds, is flame cutting on your top strap. Seriously, I had a LEO buddy who cut thru his near the 60,000 round mark. hpg:cool:

Despite the overall positive reviews of the L-frame, I WOULD worry somewhat about excessive magnums in L-frames. I've seen some develop timing problems with low magnum round counts, especially if "hot" magnum loads are used. My own personal L-frame (686) developed binding and timing problems after a few thousand relatively hot .357 magnum rounds.

The N frame, OTOH, should be perfectly fine to shoot magnums in all day IMO.

And if you want L-frame-class size and N-frame (at a minimum) toughness, there's this thing out there called a "GP100"...:D

Rounds that operate at higher pressure......

put more stress on the guns that fire them. Over time higher pressure will take its toll on any handgun. That's just a simple fact of handgunning life. Now, will K or L frames using higher pressue loads suffer undue problems right away. Probably not but they are, after all, mechanical devices that act as mechanical devices do. As with any mechanical device, e.g. car, vacuum cleaner, gun have it checked out/ serviced periodically and act accordingly. In the mean time good shooting:)

Thanks for putting my mind at ease

Shot about 1/2 38sp and 1/2 357's today. Getting better with my revolver but still waiting to get my new grips (I hope the Eagle secret service grips are smaller than the Hogue combat grips).
As an aside, I have moonclips for the 627PC (3" compensator) but I haven't used them yet. If anyone is looking at maxfire speedloaders, the eight shot M1K model, it is a little difficult to load 38sp (grips get in the way) and almost impossible to use 357's with them.

I shoot .38s in my guns chambered for that cartridge. I shoot .357 mag in the guns chambered for that one. I feel that if the gun is designed to shoot magnums, then that is what I am going to shoot in it. I have not counted the number of rounds through my M19, M27 or M28, but I am sure of one thing. They all shoot as well today as they did when I bought them 30 some odd years back.
