Shooter on a budget question for the long gun guys?

My first time so please go easy on me...I spent some time in the Navy over the M-14, on range while in port, but while underway during westpac deployments I would fire shortlines across to tenders for replenishment. On ocassion as a member of a (V.B.S.S. team) visit, board, search, siezure. I would also post a starboard firing position in support of the team. That said, I think the M-14 platform is the best fighting rifle ever made. Now as a civilian I have allways owned and done quite a bit of handgun shooting. A couple years back I decided to get back into long gun shooting, I dont have much extra money for the sport, so when I bought a gun it was done for several purposes i.e. range, not home defence but lets say with the bug out bag. The Mini 14 is perfect however the two 30 round mags doesn't make it cheap to shoot...lol So i picked up this H&R for cheap added a couple acces. and its much more fun way out to 600 yrds 22 inch barrel 13-1 twist. Is there a way to make the stock longer without a replacement? pads or recoil or somthing? Thanx in advance for any advice.

Hello, Thanks for your Service to our Country.
The easiest and cheapest way to leinthen the Stock on your Rifle is with a Slip on Recoil Pad, you could easilly add an Inch or probably more depending on the pad.
You can pick up a good pad for less than $20 Dollars at your local Sporting Goods Store.
Your M14 can also be fairly inexpensive to shoot, because you can often purchase Surplus Nato Cartridges for a fraction of the cost of comercial amunition.
Good luck with your target shooting.

Oh I forgot to mention, you can buy Spacers, and Shim a New Recoil Pad, I have a Ruger Frontier, that I shimmed the Leingth of pull from 12 to 13.5 Thats also a good option, and will not require replacement of the stock.
I had the work done by a Gunsmith, and it cost me about $80 dollars.

And if you have a do-it-yourselfer friend with a belt sander, you can size the inserts yourself. Tape the stock, first, to protect the finish.

TX Hunter-Art Eatman! I thank you both for your clear and respectful replies to my question, I was nervous asking because I've seen guys get made fun of on here for not being experts. So again thank-you for being so respectful and helpful...CV-63 ****ty Kitty Pride of the 7th.....

You can make an extension yourself if you have a scroll saw or access to one or even just a Dremel with the right attachments. If you have any experience with equipment like that it wouldn't be hard. If you know someone that has the equipment and the know how it probably wouldn't cost a lot to have them make one for you. Some sanding and some long screws could have you in business pretty quick. If you finished it nicely it could look good too. Or you could add that and an add on recoil pad and it should cover up the part you fabricate. I would think pretty much anyone with basic woodworking tools could do this pretty cheaply. If you were covering it with a slip on recoil pad you wouldn't even need to make it a perfect fit.

I recently added a Limbsaver grind-to-fit pad on a rifle I built. The LOP was what I wanted before adding it, so I ended up shortening the stock- but if you want to add 1-1/2" to the LOP it's an easy way to do it, and reduce felt recoil as well.
