Shipping to licensed gunsmith

When shipping a modern handgun to a licensed gunsmith for some custom work, is it required to tell the UPS or Fedex shipping clerk that I am shipping a gun? I know from experience that if do tell, they will require me to use overnight express at a cost of $80 or more for a medium sized handgun, and they will want to see a copy of the recipient’s FFL. I have been in touch with a gunsmith who says all that is not necessary. He says it is ok to mislead the UPS or Fedex shipping clerk by breaking the gun down into a few components and saying that I am shipping gun parts, even though the parts comprise the entire gun in one package. Regardless of the law, I think that if I did what he suggests, I would have difficulty collecting insurance if the gun got damaged or lost in shipping. Anyone out there know what is really required?

^^^ This. It is not the law, but policy of the shipper. Play by their rules or don't expect the benefit of their rules/policies. Often it costs you less to have an FFL (dealer) ship it for you, since they can use USPS for shipping handguns. If it is delivered to the FFL for gunsmithing services (or to be sent off for such services), a Form 4473 and background check is not required when it is retured to you (under federal law).
