Shipping question

I realize this is a bit off topic from the thread the OP started. I have been getting somewhat conflicting information regarding this particular issue. I am wintering in a state different from my legal residence. I also plan to obtain a pistol in my state of residence during a visit there in the next few weeks.
I wish to have the pistol here in my winter residence. Does anyone here have any thoughts about the best way to get it here? Must I ship to an FFL here in my winter residence state? Would it be wise to simply send it to myself via UPS or is that a "No, No"? I have looked around a bit in the Federal law and here on the board, but cannot find this particular question addressed...maybe I haven't looked far enough....so need some direction.

I've moved your post to a new thread, which I think will work a little better. In response to your questions, my first question is: How do you plan to get from one residence to the other? Do you need to ship the gun to yourself, or can you simply take it with you?

Spats, thanks for the help. We fly back and forth. I am not at all eager to check the pistol through the airport facility since we use soft sided zip up travel bags that we "carry on". They are not at all secure if left unattended. There is an FFL available to me and I could accept ownership through him if needed and this is available as a last resort I suppose. I could ask my LGS source for the pistol to send it to my FFL here. Didn't want to do that though, not sure just why.

For the purposes of acquiring a firearm, ATF considers you a resident of the state where you make your home. It is entirely possible to have more than one "state of residence".

USPS- only rifles or shotguns are mailable by nonlicensees. Dealers can mail firearms other than rifles or shotguns.
UPS/FedEx- both accept handguns for shipment, but do not permit shipments between nonlicensees.

I recommend placing it in your checked luggage if you fly.

While Federal law allows you to ship your firearm addressed to yourself in another state, neither UPS or FedEx permit shipments from a nonlicensee to a nonlicensee (even if its to yourself)

When shipping interstate via common carrier, Federal law requires you to notify the carrier.........and no matter what the counter clerk at UPS/FedEx says, their tariffs clearly prohibit such shipments. Violate that tariff an you get nothing on a claim for loss, damage or theft.

Well, from what you all have so kindly said, it looks like the cleanest way to do this is to simply have my Wisconsin LGS(FFL) send it to my Arizona FFL and be done with it.
I really did want to ship it to myself for logistical reasons. I am reluctant to check it through on the airplane for security reasons. Our bags are soft sided with zippers.
Thanks to all for your advice. I know more now about shipping than I ever did.
