I am shipping 2 1911's and 1 Kahr MK9 to Steve Clark Custom for some cutom work. I wanted to avoid paying UPS's outrageous fees so I called up Fed Ex and asked what their policy is regarding shipment of firearms.
The first time I called, a woman answered and I asked her if it was legal for me to ship my handguns to an FFL holder for repair. Without hesitation, she replied that only FFL can ship to FFL.
Well, I didn't want to believe her so I hung up and called Fed Ex again. This time, I got a guy and he stated that he thought it was legal. Instead of just leaving it at that, he asked me to hold for a second while he looked it up in their regulations. This is what he stated:
It's legal for an individual to ship a handgun to a legal FFL holder for repair and service. The individual must declare that the package contains a firearm at the shipping counter. Fed Ex WILL NOT label the box as a firearm nor will they include it in their tracking information. The firearm may be shipping overnight, 2nd day or 3rd day.
Insurance is free up to $100. After that, it is 2.50 up to $500. After $500, it is $.50 for every $100.
Does this sound correct? He read it right out of their policy book. If so, it'll save me a hell of a lot of money on shipping over $5000 worth of 1911's and a Kahr.
He did state that if I was shipping the firearm to an individual for resale, it must be FFL to FFL. 2nd and 3rd day only applies to service and repair.
