Shipping Firearms

I've read that only long guns can be shipped via USPS and an insured carrier (UPS or Fedex) can be used to ship handguns. Why is it that so many people on Gunbroker and GunsAmerica ship their handguns via USPS? Is it that they don't know the law or are they just hoping to get away with it? I've been a FFL holder for only two months now and i've already had three handguns come in via USPS. What's the deal?

The regs you cite to apply to individuals only. For us handguns may only go by common carrier. Long guns by USPS or common carrier. As an FFL holder you are permited to send handguns to another FFL holder vis USPS. Remember, USPS may only be used for handguns if there is a FFL dealer at BOTH ends. This is recommended now as it is cheaper so use it when you can. Go to the post office and ask for the form explaining this, I do not have the form number handy. I also suggest that you get your ATF regs out and start reading. You may find some other things of interest.

thanks a bundle for the info Jeff. UPS was starting to become a real pain, i had to drive almost 15 miles out of my way to get there. USPS is so much eaiser, plus they are one block away :)

Thanks again,
JD

The only caution is that USPS is well known for avoiding and delaying payments for lost/stolen/damaged shipments. USPS makes the process much more difficult and lengthy compared to UPS or FedEx.
