Anyone have experience with shipping ammunition? And what the best way to go about it might be? I live in NY, and nosed around a bit on Google, and it seems like UPS Ground is the way to go. Just wouldn't mind feedback/suggestions, and if there's any major laws to be mindful of.

UPS ground is pretty much the only way to ship small quantities. By law, it has to go ground (which pretty much eliminates FedEx as they use a lot of air cargo to ship even their slow stuff). And USPS is also prohibited from taking any flamable or explosive cargo. When you get up to larger (as in pallet sized) loads, you can get truck freight shipment.

The last time I shipped ammo was @ the middle of 2009 so unless anything has changed.
I packed it in a box. Wrote the information on the box (return address, address, etc.) and applied a ORM-D that I printed and held it in place with shipping tape. Drove it down to the closest "UPS Customer Center" location (I think this is the only place that will ship ammo). Walked in used the computer station to put in all the info and weigh it. Printed out the label applied it to the box. I then just handed the box to the guy at the counter. That was it.
On a side note: The guy did ask me if it was ammo and when I answered yes he asked "will it go off if dropped".

Not true. Small arms ammunition can be shipped air cargo, but it is a LOT more expensive that shipping by ground transport. When shipped by air, it is classed as Division 1.4S explosive material with all the associated hazmat charges, packing, labeling, marking and certification requirements for explosive shipments. Packages up to 25 kg can be shipped on a passenger aircraft and up to 100 kg on a cargo aircraft.

UPS ORM-D requirements and procedures changed last year. Call UPS for the current methods.

BP IS an explosive, whereas smokeless propellant is a flammable solid, so yes different rules apply.
