Shipping Ammunition - ammoman, Parcel Plus, UPS

I recently had some .223 Winchester ammo I purchased from ammoman.com that was not feeding right in my Bushmaster. Federal Am Eagle worked fine. I e-mailed him on Friday at around 5:00 pm explaining the problem. At 8:00 pm I received a reply saying to send it back for a refund or exchange - no problem. My problems began on Saturday when I attempted to ship it UPS via Parcel Plus. The box was labeled Winchester .223 ammo, with an ORM-D marking. I wrote 'ammunition' on the contents of the form. On monday I got a call from PP saying that I had to ship it directly from UPS and fill out a form. I picked it up and went to the nearest UPS office on tuesday and re-shipped it. No form to fill out. On wednesday it was returned. I called customer service, who could not explain the problem. I brought it back and got the supervisor. She was aware of the situation and was very apologetic. I asked, since I lost a day, if they would ship it next day air with no extra charge. She agreed. On thursday it re-appeared. At this point I was getting a little PO'd. Called CS again and they finally determined that UPS does not ship ammo on airplanes. UPS picked it up and will send it today. Can't wait til tommorrow.

I e-mailed Parcel Plus asking if they were unaware of the rules or if they had a policy against shipping ammo. Called today and they said they were checking the policy.

The bottom line is:

If shipping ammo via UPS, it HAs to go ground, there is no special form to fill out, the ammo can not be loose in the shippimg box, and ORM-D must be in a rectangle somewhere on the box.

ammoman is great to deal with

Parcel Plus is still an unknown - If and when I get a response on their policy (why isn't it in a book?) I will let you know, as well as the local office.

Sometimes have to ship ammo etc.for a ..ahem, large governing body, anywho-there I fill out the forms cuz it could cost me alot-the best thing todo @ home is just rip off the orm-d and cover any ammo markings-then in the rare ocassion UPS actually checks the package play "stupid joe consumer." Yes this is wrong but yes you will probably never have a hassle.

This is actually an FAA rule if I remember correctly. And it is not just ammo. Any Dangerous items can not be shiped on aircraft. Arosal(sp) cans and anything like them cannot be shipped either. I can see the point of it really. A fire in the cargo bay is bad but a plne could be landed possibly. But what if you had a few thousand rounds of ammo there. Or a few boxes of Spray paint. The plane would not make it.
