shipping ammo?

I posted some ammo on Armslist and some guy from Wisconsin emails me and say he will send me a cashiers check if I mail the ammo to him.

I’m worried im gonna get burned. Also, how do I go about shipping ammo? Never done it before.

Aside from the chance it may be a bad transaction...

Pack the ammo in a box and print out the picture of an 'ORM-D' sticker and place it on two sides of the box. Take it to the UPS shipping hub, not a 'UPS Store' and let them ask the questions.

Loaded ammo is not classified as Hazardous Material so there is no extra fee. If I read your post correctly, the person wants you to ship and then he'll send you the money? If so, don't do it. I've sold hundreds of items off the net and have never once shipped before payment. That's the accepted way of doing internet transactions.

the plan is he will send me cashiers check. once i receive it and deposit it I will send him the package. Honestly im more worried about giving the guy my address than anything.

"Honestly im more worried about giving the guy my address than anything. "

Why?? Think he will drive over from Wisconsin and pester you?

And when you ship your package, most places want your address on the package also, so he WILL KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE!!! OMG!

I would worry more about FTF transactions, than half way across the country.

If you are worried about the check then ask for a USPS money order. either that or sit on the ammo until the check clears. Ammo cannot be shipped USPS and UPS has changed their policy in the past year(s). Ammo now must go ORM-D. There will be an additional fee of around 20.00 for the first eight or so pounds. At least that's what it was some time ago when I used to deal with Haz-mat type things.

From what I understand you are not allowed to ship ammunition through the US Postal Service and that you could be breaking the law if you do so. Here is information from the USPS site (note the 'is prohibited from mailing' at the end):

"Small Arms Ammunition. Ammunition is classified as a Division 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, or 1.4 explosive, depending on the degree of hazard. Ammunition that is regulated as a Class 1 explosive and designed to be fired from a pistol, revolver, rifle, or shotgun, as well as associated primers and blank cartridges (including those designed for tools) and propellant powder for use in any firearm, is prohibited from mailing."

Here is the USPS link:

My understanding is that only UPS accepts freight of ammunition as non-hazmat material and then only through UPS Ground and the package must be marked as ORM-D - Cartridges, Small Arms.

FedEx will accept ammunition but only as hazardous material (which would incur a hazmat surcharge).

To make sure you are in compliance with shipping restrictions, UPS Ground would be the way to go for shipping ammunition. All you have to do is to either write 'ORM-D' on the box, or google and print a free 'ORM-D' label, and affix it to your package.

HW, UPS does not charge a HazMat fee for ORM-D (e.g. small arms ammunition).

However if you ship primers or powder (the reloading components, not as part of ammunition) with UPS then they cannot be shipped as ORM-D and they do require a HazMat designation and a $27.50 hazmat surcharge.

I hope thats true, because the dude is only sending em enough money in the check for standard ground shipping and I imagine you will be a little peeved if i try to charge him extra afterword.

Yeah......this is incorrect.
As stated above, you can send up to 60 lbs. of small arms ammo vie Fedex or UPS Ground, but not USPS. There is no special fee or requirement, and there is no signature needed. A few boxes of ammo should cost about $15-20 to send via UPS.

^^^ Correct. I ship ammo frequently and have set up a FedEx account for this. All that's required is to securely pack the ammo in a carton with no other markings on the outside, label it, and place an "ORM-D/Small Arms Ammunition" label on the carton, either take it to a UPS or FedEx terminal/hub and ship it. The storefront facilities won't take any hazardous or ORM-D shipments. If you set up an account they will come to your door and pick it up. The problem is they will not take ammo from an "unknown shipper". Using your account makes you a "known shipper" since they know who you are and where you live.

Be sure and get payment in the form of a USPS money order and tale that money order to any PO and they can either cash it, depending on the amount, or at least tell you if it's a good money order or not. Your bank can also call to verify a money order. You can do this yourself too: 866-459-7822.

Just properly ship it, you should be fine. Deposit the check and wait a week for funds to clear, there are such things as fake certified checks out there.
