Shipping a handgun out of California

Hello all, here's a question about shipping out of California.

If I sell a handgun, private party in California, and want to ship it, does it have to be shipped by a FFL or can I simply ship it myself? I have gotten conflicting answers on this and most don't seem to know for certain.

I am looking at listing in the for sale items here and possibly on Gunbroker. That being said, the chances of an out of state sale are decent. I just want to be sure I can ship it myself, rather than use a FFL which will undoubtedly cost me.

But I must confess, I would rather give some $ to a FFL than a ton of $$$ to our legal system.

Anyone know for certain?

It's almost cheaper to have an honest FFL do the shipping. They can use UPS ground, you can't. They also know the laws.

UPS has no provision to ship handguns via ground, FFL holder or not. As far as FFLs knowing the law::rolleyes:
