Shipping a firearm.

If I wanted to ship a firearm to a family member in another state, how would I go about it?

From Washington to Tennesee.

It will be to a family member, and no sale or trade is involved.

Will it need to go through an FFL?
What services may I use? (UPS, FedEx, etc.)

Thanks in advance.

Yes, you need to go through a FFL dealer. You can ship through UPS or FedEx. You'll need an inked signed copy of a FFL from whoever is receiving the firearm.
You can ship the firearm yourself to the FFL holder or have a FFL ship the firearm to the receiving Dealer.

I am assuming that the firearm is a gift. Is this correct? If so; it needs to go through a Tennessee FFL.

As to shipping; it depends on if it is a long gun or a handgun.

Sorry Guys.

I posted on my break, in a bit of a rush. Let me add some detail.

Looks like I may be going back to Iraq. I would like to ship one of my more valuable rifles to my parents for storage, as opposed to military storage or a rental unit.
NO transfer of ownership is involved.

Hope the extra info can make this a bit easier.

Thanks again.

Unfortunately whether you are selling it or just giving it makes no difference under the applicable federal laws. The only ways you can ship it to them without going through FFL is if a) you are shipping it to yourself in their care, b) you are loaning or renting it to them. If your permanent address is their home then you could probably ship it to yourself at that address in their care, though if you want to be extra careful go through an FFL.

If this is not a transfer, but merely sending the gun to yourself for hunting, for instance, you can ship directly. For a transfer you need not use an FFL on your end, just the receiver. There is no situation where you legally have to use an FFL on the sender's end.

For rifles, USPS and UPS make are pretty easy and cheap. For handguns, you either have to pay for overnight service from Fed Ex, or divide the handgun into parts and ship in two boxes with UPS Ground. I've found the two box method works well when you over insure both halves. $18 total will get the whole thing anywhere in CONUS. You do need to inform them that the box with the frame contains a "firearm receiver", and needs an adult signature, but is not a handgun. The other box is "gun parts" or "parts".

This isn't a trick - UPS recommended this method and I've used it many times.

Just saw the followup. Don't involve a dealer. Send it to yourself care of your parents. State of residence is immaterial as you can do this for hunting trips in Alaska or whatever.

Thanks guys.

Thanks a lot guys.
Checked with UPS today. Should be no problem.
They did advise that I not come in at peak hours, just so that other people don't get freaked out.
It was suggested politely, and I think I will take their advice.

Thanks a bunch, all.
