Shimming Leupold Dual Dove Tail 2 pieces.

I need to gain about 20-30 MOA on my Rem 700 Vs with Leupold 2 piece dual dovetail mounts. Suggestions on exactly how to pull this off and how much I am going to have to add to the rear would be great. Please assume I am an idiot and need very specific instructions. Thank you in advance.

GG&G in Tucson sells a base with a machined inclination to turn all that useless down adjustment into added up adjustment. It's pricey, however.

Hola El Rojo!! You could shim the scope with a piece of alumninum soda can. The approximate thickness you need to get 20 MOA is calculated like this:
20"/ 3600"(100 yards x 36") = shim thickness/4" (distance between rings). So it is about 0.022", easy to get with the soda (or beer!!) can. Another advantge of using aluminum is that it is easy to cut and shape, and it will crush fit when tightened. When you are putting a shim you are in fact putting some unwanted pressure on the scope tube, but you can get away with this small thickness with no ill effects. DO NOT try to put a thicker shim!!! The ideal thing, short of a tapered base, is to use the Burris rings that have self aligninig plastic inserts. You can get offset inserts, originally intended to correct misalignments in the mount or receiver holes, and use them to slope your scope without putting any stress on them. You can even use two offset inserts (one back and one forward) to duplicate the amount of correction. Hope this helps.

If you do use the aluminum can trick, one way to relieve the scope stress is to gently lap the rings. This process involves an aluminum or steel tube of the same diameter as the scope (available from Brownells or Home Depot) and some lapping paste (valve grinding paste should work).

Once the bases are set as you want them, lock the rifle in a padded vise and lap the rings with the tube and compound. Proceed until you've taken out the high spots as shown by the removed blueing. Do Not overlap as your rings will not hold the scope tightly enough if overdone.

My new Sinclair's catalog shows a one piece Leupold incline
base for about $18. I'll be putting it on my new .308.
Seems like an affordable way to go without using shims and worrying about bending the scope.

Sinclair's catalog?

Where do you get a sinclair's catalog? I was not aware Leupold made the tappered bases. So most of you don't believe that I am will kink the tube with such a minor adjustment? Thanks again.

You might also try sending a note to Leopold direct. I had a similar issue with a Leopold scope/rings for my Featherweight and I shot them an email. Less than a week later, I received some shims and a letter from them offering tips to try.
