Shelter in Place or Relocate ?

I'm on a terrorism mailing list and the talk of an attack during the Aug 6th-9th time frame (60yrs since VJ day) and the use of Nukes is high on the lists.

Now I'm not in touch with any of my old USAF buddies and I can't call the NSA for intercept info, so I don't know what is going on. But all this got me thinking....

A nuke attack in New York, DC, Boston, LA, you name the place. Do you hang out at your home, or get as far away from anything important, preferrably crosswind exit.

Being in Mass, I would head towards I-91 to exit the area and get away from any windborne contamination. But I could always hit the cellar, and hope for favorable winds and no rain.

If you plan to leave, do you keep fuel in your exit vehicle? Do you have at least a mental list of what to grab quick?

I'm just wondering if anyone here has checked out the Ready.gov and thought it through.....

This has some info on the subject:

If you're really sure, then take a vacation out of the city during that time. If you are in a city when a nuclear device detonates, then you will be stuck there, and your only alternative is to shelter in place. Ready.gov is a calming measure, so don't rely on it entirely for survival info.

This may not be entirely true. If you are not in the blast zone, and quickly read the direction of the plume, assuming relatively mild winds, a 20 minute walk perpendicular to the direction of travel can put you into a safe zone. Safe at least from immediate fallout. Don't stop, and visit at the end of your 20 minutes. Keep on truckin, and pray the winds don't shift.

Bravo has a good point, even if it's obscured in the posting.

If you're in the vicinity of a nuke blast you may find that vehicle your planned to use for your escape is a worthless piece of junk. EMP from a nuke blast will blow out transistorized electronics in a fairly wide area. You'll be walking out... or riding a horse, bicycle or something similar.

Even with all the talk of terrorist activities, unless you're living in a major city or target area, you're probably unlikely to be impacted. Terrorist targets tend to be aimed at civilian (non-hardened) targets in larger cities where they'll get more press mileage out of it.
