Shell Sorter!!! (range report)

Hi everyone,

This month, Midway has a sale on the "shell sorter" for sorting range brass. Seeing how I shoot A LOT of 9mm and 38spl, I decided its worth it for the 30 bucks.

During the week, I shoot at a public range where all the local police departments shoot for training. The range can gather about 3 FULL 5 gallon pails a week with all the shooting going on there.

Well, today, I showed up with my shell sorters and went to work. (side note: I have been shooting there for close to 15 years, and have made friends with all the regulars and range officers).

If any of you were considering purchasing this item, it is WELL WORTH THE MONEY!!! I had 3 5gallon buckets sorted in about 1.5 hours.

The sorter will seperate 45, 38/357, 40, 9mm very quick and easy. Its also very accurate. The most time consuming part was pulling the 9mm out of the 40 cases when separating the 40. 45ACP definitly sorts the easiest.

Overall, a great buy. Anyone in a similar situation with access to all that brass should definitly consider the shell sorter!!

If it wasen't for that 10mm brass mixed in

I have a set of 4 that work a lot better then hand sorting. But the odd brass still has to be sorted out.

38, 38 special, 357, 41 mag so mention a few.

I agree - they are a great product / I've had my set for over a year now ....

but you do still have to do some sorting by hand ( get the 10mm's out of the .40's - and the .38 spl and .357 mag get hung up in that tray as well ) / .44 mag and .45 acp in that tray will be together / and the .380's will still be in the 9mm tray ..../ but all the .22's and junk ends up back in the bucket !!

I just cleaned about 10,000 .45 acp cases:
-----------------------------------------
You still have to go back and sort some of the junk out of the .45acp's too / get all the AMERC out ( it won't resize properly ) and any NT brass --dump it too. But getting a tub ( dirty ) as .45 acp is a big step forward / and then I run them thru a vibrating cleaner / and then sort by hand after they're clean ---and put them in a "clean and sorted tub of .45acp " and all they need is lube / and they get dropped into the case feeder ....

I know they sell a 380 insert for this set. How does that work. Will it keep the 380 out of the 9mm??

just the reviw I've been waiting for:-)

I was thinking of ordering one but wasn't sure how it worked. thanks for the heads up. I think I'll order one!

The 380 metal plate works. It is a little bit more time consuming, but it beats hand inspecting 9 vs 380!

Just keep sorting down, down, down.

I also shoot a lot of 22 along with the other calibers and those are stuck in everything.

So now I have piles of 380, 9mm and 45 awaiting the Dillon 1050:cool:

Ditto on the Shell Sorter

I hesitated before buying because I worried the set would be a cheap plastic set that 'flexed and spread'.
Not the case at all, reasonably heavy duty and works well.

Its not magic, as noted the set can't recognize the difference between 10MM and .40 caliber -- but there isn't much 10MM being left laying around anyway.

Also, of course the set (45///40&10MM////38&9mm) catches almost every size of rifle cartridge in the top (45 caliber) tray.
Luckily I can still tell the difference between rifle brass and 45acp so it's not a big problem to handle.

It is a time saver for sure but there is some sorting by hand but that is better then sorting it all by hand.

I have a set and I like it. It's hardly the perfect solution but it sure cuts down on the time it takes me to sort everything out and it does a great job of cutting out the grit and rimfire cases. :)

I was actually emailing with the guy that makes those sorters. I was looking for metal inserts to sort out .25 ACP and .32 ACP. He said he was working on it, then I never heard anything.
