Shell Length

Boought a box of S&B 12 gauge shells. They are about a 1/4 of an inch longer than the rest of the 12's I have.
I was worried that it was not a 2 3/4 shell so I measured it and the rest.
The american shells were all about 2.25 inches while the S&B was about 2.5.

The S&B's are labeled 2 3/4in and 70mm.
Is it safe to fire a shell of this length in a 2 3/4 in. weapon?

Is the shell system another of those old systems that are no longer correct?

The 2 3/4" stands for the length after firing. The S&B will not harm any shotgun chambered for 2 3/4", which is most US made guns. The Brits and Euros did have 12 gauges chambered for 2 1/2, even 2",but they're not common here...
