Sheerest optimism...

...was the officer I heard on the radio last night, calling in the serial number of a Jennings .22, to check for stolen.

This is one of those instances in which you wonder--
  • [a]Who would risk a felony to steal one of these, and
Who would bother to report one of these?

Needless to say, it came back from Dispatch as "No record found."

Dude,
Who would bother to report one of these?

Not reporting it's a crime- (edited by me since I can't verify the extent of the crime be it felony or not)
'course I'm pretty certain you know that and this was just funnin us right?

Well, even if not reporting it is was not a crime, there is the danger of it being used in a crime. You definitely want to break off the legal connections to a stolen gun, especially since you can't control who has it.

There is the shame of admitting to owning it though.

Youza!
24 hours of on-line searching later----
Seems like everybody (Dems anyhow) want to make failure to report a stolen firearm a capitol crime. Lots of "STOLEN FIREARMS MUST BE REPORTED WITHIN 24 HOURS" warnings. Nothing really that spells out if failure to report is or isn't a crime!

I did the next best thing===
The dog and I went out to get the morning paper. Officer friendly was making his rounds of the neighborhood, so I waved him down and asked him if it was a crime to not report a stolen firearm. His answer in his exact words: "I'm not sure. Call the prosecuter." ( a few min of chit-chat later)"The way your dressed should be a crime." :D

*re the dressed:
Baggy swimming trunks, long sleeved dress shirt, black loafers w/no socks and an NRA cap. Hey, what can I say, it's Saturday and nobody is usually alive here in "Stepford" at 6:00AM on a weekend. :D
