A good, close friend of mine is a pro-2nd Amendment person, but not a gun guy. He doesn't own a gun and doesn't plan on owning one but over the years he has been shooting with me several times. (He's a recurve bow guy)
He has also handled several of my acquisitions and has watched me go through the same safety procedure dozens of time - drop the magazine, rack the slide, visually inspect the chamber, finger off the trigger, point in a safe direction, etc.
Recently, he had to deal with an ex-girlfriend's mental breakdown and her very real suicide possibility. He was able to secure her Glock 9mm, release the mag and empty the chamber. He then put the gun in his car and got her the mental health support she needed.
He credits the time we spent together shooting and handling firearms safely with his ability to know what to do with a loaded gun once he had control over it.
