SF to become giant bum magnet?

Just read that SF has a new plan that they are implementing that sounds like universal healthcare for any resident. Does not matter if you are employed, illegal, whatever, you will get free healthcare in their 200 million(for now) dollar plan just by being a "resident". So now what, stand back and watch the city go bankrupt? Who is taking bets on how long that takes? And how long it takes to double in population? Looks like they just lit the fuse on the big implosion.... At least it will be an example for others who are contemplating the same thing.

I grew up in the bay area. There probably isn't enough room in SF for another 1000 people let alone double.:D That's why I left, to crowded and to crazy. It will be interesting to see how long it takes them to go bankrupt like you said. If it wasn't for having family there still I wouldn't even go back for vacation.

SF to become giant bum magnet?
I'd say it's been a giant bum magnet since circa 1992.

I began my tenure in the grand PRK in 1985 (and released myself on my own recognizance in 2005). Back then, I used to visit SF occasionally. Nice place. Great seafood. Beautiful waterfront. Fresh Anchor Steam beer. More oddballs per capita than anywhere else I'd been, but that made The City quaint.

Around 1992, I noticed changes starting. The place started getting filthy. In 1995, I worked a 3-month contract downtown. The whole city seemed to reek of urine, feces, and alcoholic vomit. I actually had to step over sleeping bums to get from my BART station to work. Trash everywhere. Since then, I've been back willingly twice and unwillingly three times. Pigs have cleaner sties. The place has become a giant Petri dish, and you're better off not knowing what's growing there. Unwillingly is the only way I'd go back.

Maybe I've been unlucky. Regardless, the last 5 times I've been there, it's taken nearly 3 hours to get out (didn't take the BART those times). The traffic was a lot of stop and very little go.

I see an opportunity for other cities to bus their free-loaders and illegal immigrants to SF.

Some years back Santa Barbara decided they would take in all their homeless. Naturally, their homeless population immediately quadrupled and they had to quit their program.

Since SF is part of California, they will undoubtedly in the future try to get the federal government to bail them out, much as California tried to force insurance companies to make the rest of the country to subsidize California earthquake insurance.

It's a shame. Going to The City used to be fun, like going to the zoo. Now it's like going to Calcutta. (It's still the only place where I've seen a grown man walking down the street with his Johnson hanging out and taking a whiz as he strolled along.)

Too bad 99.9999999% of bums are completely insane, and they won't be intelligent enough to do something like take advantage of social welfare. Cheers.

That's great! Free sex change for city employees. Monthly cash disbursement for dope addicts.

I wish all the bums and trash in the US would head for San Fran. They deserve each other.

A year or so ago, a sheriff in a neighboring county got in the news by doing exactly that, except that he gave his bums a one-way bus ticket to Santa Cruz, which is only an hour or so south of SF. Since Santa Cruz has a large University of California campus, it has become the bum capital of the universe. The students think the presence of bums is culturally enriching.

I see some closure here. When I first moved to Phoenix, I learned that many of the gang members were there because they had been convicted of crimes in California and were given two choices: go to jail or leave the state.

"become", I thought they already were:rolleyes: OTOH, best place to have both the Bums and Liberals together as 1:D

I'm working on a plan to sneak in a Presidential executive order for signature declaring San-Francisco a U.S. air-force bombing range.

LOL!

All the British members of TFL must be spraying their Guiness all over their keyboards :D

I'd say it's been a giant bum magnet since circa 1992.
Personally, I'd be inclined to say it started circa 1965 -1973 with the hippy's & Haight Ashbury/the rise of the counter culture/anti war protests/free concerts.
Most of the music from that era endlessly extolled what a Utopian dream SF was.
Free love, free drugs, free clinics to take care of you when the other 2 made it necessary.
SF was the epicenter of that ideal.
As a young man growing up at the time, I recall there were only 2 destinations the youth of America were drawn to. SF and LA. SF was the preferred simply because it was viewed as more "open".

I believe what you witnessed in 1992 was the direct result of the generation spawned in the 60's and reared (no pun intended) in that open environment,,, coming of age.
