Setting up my AR-10 A2 carbine

I am looking for the best all-round optics for my AR-10 A2 Carbine. Optics to provide fast acquisition of multiple targets ranging from 0-300m. Rugged, low light capable and all weather … price is no option so long as it does not cost too much.I would also like the same system to be adaptable for targets out to 500m. I’m thinking more of a field infantry role rather then a CQB weapon with this one.

My AR has the fixed “carry handle” and I would prefer the sight to be mounted forward of it.

What are your suggestions?

ACOG Reflex II

Scott,

I did considerable research in my quest to aquire an optics system for my SA-58 FAL carbine. In the end, it came down to whether I felt I needed magnification over faster snap shots at close range. In this rifles role, I felt magnification was a hinderance and not a benefit. The Reflex II gives you VERY fast shots on multiple targets ranging out to your max listed. I prefer the triangle reticle, at close range just bring the triangle to bear on the target and squeeze the trigger. At distance, use the apex of the triangle to engage with higher precision. For me, it works very well and is fast to boot.

For magnification, really the only game in town is the Elcan and ACOG lines. The Elcan in particular is a fine scope but is somewhat pricy. I intend to put an Elcan on a new full size SA-58 in the next 6 months.

Also, anything in my book that does not require batteries is a huge plus. Just another thing to go wrong...

Aimpoint 2X, except that it's hard to find in stock.

Looks like a conventional scope. I'm no great shot, I can shoot 2" groups with it with Radway Green 1983 308 at 100 yards on an M1A standard.

If you don't want a "glowing" reticle of some sort, there are billions of choices of "regular" scopes - just cruise the sports stores etc. and see what you like. Since you're not worried much about CQB, this is probably your best bet. If you DO want something that glows, I would recommend Aimpoint as you have control over the brightness. This is the true reason to have a dot. The ACOG type can be a bit screwy if you're in darkness looking out into bright daylight, etc.

Battler.
