Set Trigger Question for TC Hawken

I just purchased a used .50 cal percussion Thompson Center Hawken Rifle from another member of TFL. It arrived today and I'm trying to figure out the double set triggers.

Years ago when I shot a friend's Hawken rifle I seem to remember pulling the back trigger which then made the front trigger very light. On this gun when I pull the back trigger nothing happens. No click or anything and it doesn't change the front trigger at all.

Am I doing something wrong? If it sounds like something is broken what do you recommend I look for? Thanks for your help.
 
one is a hair trigger and the other is a reg. pull trigger . if you think it pulls the same try adjusting the screw . I think thats how it works, I do know its a 2 type tigger .
 
There is a set trigger sear adjustment screw between the two triggers, it adjusts the set trigger's sear engagement. If it is turned in too far, the set trigger will fail to cock and the lock stays in single-stage. You should hear a click when you pull the rear trigger.

Pulling the rear trigger cocks the set trigger, the front trigger releases the set trigger. If the set trigger is not cocked, the front trigger will still fire the gun but with a normal trigger pull.
 
On your TC Hawken model, the rear trigger is used to set the front trigger for as lighter pull for target shooting. When you go to full cock and set the rear trigger, it turns the front trigger into a hair trigger. Without the set, and again, in full cock the front trigger is just a hunting trigger and a bit firmer. As mentioned, there is an adjustment on the bottom of the trigger plate, located between the two triggers. At this time will not describe how it does this just say that the set trigger is an assist on the front trigger or normal trigger. I would suspect that yours is out of the adjustment range. If you have to, pull it and inspect it. Not hard to do at all. You can even observe it's operation in the removed condition. kind of neat how it works and been around for more years than you or I.

To Set; (Per The Manual)
With the rifle uncharged and unprimed, place the hammer in the half-cock position. set the rear trigger. With the trigger "set", carefully turn the adjustment screw clockwise until the trigger mechanism "snaps" into the "unset" position. Stop turning the instand the mechanism "snaps".
Do not turn the adjustment screw beyond this point for it marks the instant of total set trigger disengagement. Once the mechanism "snaps", turn the adjustment screw counter clockwise one full turn.

Might also add that there could be safety issues on not setting the "set" right as it could lead to accidental discharges. So please be safe !!

most of this info is correct now first thing is turn the rifle so trickers are up then adjust don't know why but this is the way most gun books say to do and old books from tc,cva,traditions say this
