I'm impressed with these large collections.
Never cared for 1911's until recently; guess that was because of early experience with old military 45 1911's, starting when I was about 8 to 10 years old, 70 years ago.
When I began target shooting within the past couple of years, my LGS owner suggested the Springfield Range Officer 9mm. It was nice, but made much better by $50 worth of gunsmith work.
I've since moved on, now own five 1911's. They're all good, accurate shooting guns. The most expensive is a STI Range Master 9mm; the most accurate is a SIG 45 Target. Because I'm primarily a target shooter, I own and shoot a variety of handguns, the majority coming from Europe.
I've (IMHO) discovered there are a lot of guns out there that are better designs than the 1911. Of course, "better design" is in the eye of the beholder. My Swiss made ones seem to have the best workmanship and highly accurate. Recently, I've tried the CZ 75 TS 9mm, it's very, very easy to shoot and accurate. Fired a frend's Tanfoglio Witness Elite 9mm, very accurate; at 10 yards put 20 of 20 rounds into a 3" target. Bought a bunch of HK's during their rebate program last December, excellent guns. All of my guns from Europe seem to be much easier to field strip.
My favorite handguns are the HK p7m8, the SIG p210 6 and the S&W Model 41 .22 caliber. Trailing in fourth place is the Springfield Range Officer 9mm; the price it's hard to beat.
