Serious comparison

I own a Fusion Samaritan, WC Protector, EB Special Forces, LB Boss, Springfield TRP, Kimber Tac Custom, NH Falcon, blah blah blah... The Fusion 4" Samaritan has functioned flawlessly. With the Briley bushing, it is as accurate as any I own. As with all the above (bought NIB) break in is important, and cleaning/maintenance essential. Been a firearms instructor for 20 years and use my 1911 as training rentals. Nothing but respect for all the Custom makers. If I was stuck picking a favorite, Wilson Supergrade no question. I own 54 1911s and have been shooting all my life. Nothing beats 1911 and nothing beat Wilson Supergrades. really interested in others opinion.

I am not a 1911 guy at all. My favorite I evr shot was actually a Springfield milspec. I have fired springfields, Taurus, S&W, Les Baer and nighthawk. I really like the looks of the ruger, but I cannot see owning one until (hopefully) the CMP sells them.

54 is quite an impressive collection.

54 is a good start, but I've got you beat. :p

Seriously though, I'll disagree with your assessment. While the Super Grade is a nice pistol, I don't even consider it a true custom 1911. The best models are built by the custom builders, such as Ted Yost, Paul Liebenberg, and several others.

As for the design, I'm actually more a collector of European pistols and can say pretty confidently that some other designs "beat" the 1911, as far as I'm concerned. The 1911 has always been my favorite design if I had to pick just one. However, its at a disadvantage when compared to some of the best European pistols built over the years.

Just my opinion, of course...

I'm impressed with these large collections.

Never cared for 1911's until recently; guess that was because of early experience with old military 45 1911's, starting when I was about 8 to 10 years old, 70 years ago.

When I began target shooting within the past couple of years, my LGS owner suggested the Springfield Range Officer 9mm. It was nice, but made much better by $50 worth of gunsmith work.

I've since moved on, now own five 1911's. They're all good, accurate shooting guns. The most expensive is a STI Range Master 9mm; the most accurate is a SIG 45 Target. Because I'm primarily a target shooter, I own and shoot a variety of handguns, the majority coming from Europe.

I've (IMHO) discovered there are a lot of guns out there that are better designs than the 1911. Of course, "better design" is in the eye of the beholder. My Swiss made ones seem to have the best workmanship and highly accurate. Recently, I've tried the CZ 75 TS 9mm, it's very, very easy to shoot and accurate. Fired a frend's Tanfoglio Witness Elite 9mm, very accurate; at 10 yards put 20 of 20 rounds into a 3" target. Bought a bunch of HK's during their rebate program last December, excellent guns. All of my guns from Europe seem to be much easier to field strip.

My favorite handguns are the HK p7m8, the SIG p210 6 and the S&W Model 41 .22 caliber. Trailing in fourth place is the Springfield Range Officer 9mm; the price it's hard to beat.
