About a month ago in American Rifleman, they had a Law Enforcement issue. They were showing pictures of "tools of the trade" and they had a Mini-14 with a wood handguard. I have read somewhere that this is a series 70 Mini-14. Is this right? Do they also make this kind of Mini-30? The normal handguard on both of them is sort of cheap feeling plastic.

Older models had the wood handguard. The plastic one covers the operating slide rod thing (?) better. Guess they thought it would be easier on the fingers of people who dont pay attention to how they hold it.

Older Wood Handguards

The ones with the Older wood Handguards are sereis 180 Mini-14's.... it is hard to find parts and stocks for them.

Do you know where to buy the wood handguard? I think it looks a lot better, more like the classic M1 Carbine.

i have one of those mini 14 with the wooden handguard.you are right it is a much prittyer rifle.i traded my mini 14 to a buddy for the all wood one because he couldnt put a folder stock on the older mini.i gladly traded.
make the mini look more like a m1a carbine.

THE wooden handguards are not inerchangable with latter model guns,as i said ,my buddy coulnt put a folder stock on it so i was glad to trade him mine.
parts,im sure you can get any part from ruger for the 180 series.besides i doubt this rifle will break down, its overbuilt as are all ruger firearms.
