Serial number

Is there any reason to not give out a serial number on a weapon? I am working a deal, and the guy asked for the serial number on mine to call the manufacturer to see if there are any recalls on it. Am I being scammed, or is this a legitimate request?

Don't give him the entire serial number,,,

SN: 123456,,,

Give him: 123XXX or 1234XX

It may be an urban legend but there is the tale of someone giving out a serial number,,,
Then the person turned that number in to the police as a stolen weapon.

Personally I wouldn't take the chance,,,
A partial number will allow him to identify it to the manufacturer.

I won't buy a used firearm without knowing the serial number. I don't need it for any factory recalls, I have the local PD verify that it has not been reported as stolen. I will not buy a used weapon without that verification.

when buying i ask for the 1st letter and 3 #'s on sigs, 1st 3 letter's on glocks to get an idea on approximate age.

the individual could turn the s/n in as a stolen firearm and make an insurance claim.

I don't think it's quite that easy. First he'd have to prove it was ever his.

i'd have a hard time proving i'm the original owner of my '68 python, '94/226,
'96/kimber classic.

ya think it would be any different if someone had mine/yours/anybody's s/n to turn in as a lost/stolen firearm?

gees mr insurance adjustor, the reciepts and laptop were taken in the robbery.
