Serial number on frame exterior

I sure would appreciate some knowledge on how many/what models/what years of S&W revolvers have a serial number on the exterior of the frame in addition to the serial number behind the yoke/crane. Even if its a one-at-time chime in of "mine does." Thanks in advance!

Left side below the cylinder

My 10mm has one on the left side below the cylinder... I was wondering if this is common. Thanks for your response!

There are a few exceptions, but almost all S&W's have the serial number on the bottom of the grip. Newer S&W's also have the serial number on the frame under the crane. On older S&W's, if there is a number on the crane and on the frame underneath it, that number is an assembly number, not the serial number.

At different times, S&W also put the serial number on the rear of the cylinder, on the barrel, and on the inside of the extractor.

NYPD required the serial number on the left side of the frame on their 64's as i recall. And, I've seen it there on a couple of other models. I'll have to go look, but I think I have a 66 F comp that has the serial number on the inside of the top strap. But, they all have it on the butt also.

Three places.. Same number

Yes on the butt, yes inside the yoke and yes, same number, on the. Left side of the frame exterior - between the cylinder and the trigger.
