Serial number help for S&W...

Yeah, I know that I'm the one who normally supplies this information, but I'm on vacation, and my books are in Virginia.

I helped my friend buy an S&W Model 15 today, and the serial number starts 79K.

It's a 15-4.

Can anyone give me a date range for the 79Ks?

Looks like the 79K serial range would be from 1980;
57K0001-91K6800. Hope this helps?

Finally broke down, and bought a copy of the Standard Catalog, of Smith and Wesson, second edition. Now I won't have to bug you any more. :D

Ala Dan is right, the book shows it's about a year older than my model 15-4, which was built in 1981.

How much did your friend have to pay?

Maybe we can get the authors to make a pocket edition of the serial number pages? I'd love to have that when I go to gun shows.

The gun is about 90-92%, and he paid $215 for it, I think.
