Sentenced to death

I hope this thread takes off, and doesnt flop.

What is the general opinion of the death penalty here on TFL?

My opinion: It does not do what it is put in place for, and that is a crime deterant. People who are hellbent on killing someone will not for a second have the chance of being executed by the system go through their head.

Don't wait twenty dang years to do it it would be a better deterant. Plus it would help if it was in a more public setting. It would hit closer to home then. I always thought it should be up to the victim or the victims family to decide the punishment.

Making the capital punishment more public will only desensitize people.
Life would be worth much less, if death is seen all the time.

Once again, my opinion.

Perosnally....

...the death penalty eliminates the punishment....life without parole, under the most horrific, but "legal" conditions, to include no TV, reading material, no cigarettes, food with no taste, like C-rats, separation from all (eliminates that nuts to butts activity), no phone....just nothing...now that's punishment. In this case, we know that rehabilitation is no longer an option, so make it the punishment from hell. Just my opinion.

what about people that have been executed but later found to be innocent? the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one?

For the heinous crimes of rape and premeditated murder, execution should be swift and not a burden on the tax payer. These people have proven themselves unfit for civilized society and a danger to others. Their victims never got a second chance, why should they?

I feel that for heinous crimes, I.E. Rape, Murder, crimes against children, the accused should be executed by the most painful and in-humane way possible, as soon as the trial is over, and in public.

I do not want my tax dollars to pay for keeping these criminals fed, housed, and treated medically.

Toward te question of those found guilty, then proven innocent?
The majority of those cases were from the years before the modern DNA testing and other forensic science that is now available. I feel confident that convictions now are based on better evidence.

Heck, I would not be opposed to letting the family form a firing squad to execute the convicted.

I say don't waste taxpayer's money by putting them on Death Row. Just take them out into the woods and put 2 bullets in their head. The chances that they'll feel anything is slim to none anyway.

Eye for an Eye.

Judges should have a "purple needle" in a strongbox under the bench. They should be permitted to, upon conviction, remove said purple needle, and dispatch the offender on the spot. That is swift, final and the only way any death penalty should be undertaken or taken seriously. The "20 years on death-row" is no deterrent.

Im pro death penalty.

If we have to let em live then make em work hard everyday for each meal! No work no food. I have to work for my food! The tax payer shouldn't be punished. I also think rehab is a joke.

I don't have a problem with the notion of putting certain offenders to death.

I do have a problem with the entirely arbitrary and inconsistent way the death penalty is applied in this country. For a judicial punishment to be fair, it has to be fairly and consistently applied, and nobody can seriously look at this history of the death penalty in the U.S. and argue that it has been doled out in a fair and consistent manner.

The death penalty is not justice; it has never been about justice. It has mostly been a tool of social control, and a convenient way for DAs to paint themselves "tough on crime".

I'm not real fond of the death penalty, but I also understand that Life Without Parole doesn't exist.

That kind of leaves me stuck.

More than 2 Witness

I like the idea that if More than 2 people saw you committ the act then you should be Killed faster, lets say within 2 weeks of being sentenced.

I also think that the Victim or the Victims immediate Family should have the option of performing the Duty of executioner... Exspecially in the case where a parent has lost a Child, To me the only way to get closer on something like that would be if I Flipped the switch that snuffed the person's life that took my Childs.

I had a cousin who was raped and then stabbed 27 times in front of her kids . There was no doubt of his guilt as he was turned in by his own family ... If the guy didn't get the death penalty , I'd have been inclined to shoot him to death myself.

Had it been my wife or daughter , it would have become my mission in life.

As Heard on ABC's "This Week with David Brinkley" Years Ago...

"The rate of recidivism among executed murderers is zero percent."--George Will

Mr. Will is not a particularly strong advocate of the Second Amendment, but I agree with his assessment of this situation.

I don't think it's a deterrent. Death penalty should be dropped and prison system reworked. In its place: HARD LABOR. No death penalty - you're going to mine coal with a pick for the rest of your life.
