Sent my 637 J-frame back to S&W today... Will they help me?

I've always loved S&W revolvers, and I really love how light the 637 revolver is, but it clearly doesn't live up to the quality standards of the S&W of the past. I'm having problems with the horrible clear coat finish peeling off the back-strap and I've been experiencing bullet-pull (with low grain bullets), which... when it happens, will lock up the cylinder.
I e-mailed S&W to complain about my model 637 and they issued a return authorization number. I Fedex'd it back to them today.I asked them that if they could permanently address both of these issues, and give me assurance that it wouldn't happen in the future, to go ahead and repair and return it, and if they couldn't make that promise, to REPLACE it with a 2-1/8" model 60.
What do you all think that they will do?

I've not had a lot of problems with S&W stuff but, when I did, their customer service was absolutely terrific. Don't really know the details of your particular situation but my bet is that they will fix your original firearm - period.

No problems fixing my 640-3

I bought a 640 a few weeks ago and had several FTFs right out of the box. S&W gave me a shipping authorization, I FedEx'ed it on a Saturday, they fixed it and got it back to me by the next Friday. I've run a few boxes since then and I've had zero malfunctions.

I've read that the clear cote is problematic but S&W will refinish it as often as needed at no cost.

As for the trade, I don't know. Gun retailers (don't know about manufacturers) will not exchange or return anything. I think the problem is that exchanges would involve a new transfer and background checks which cost them more $$. But this is probably no more expensive than overnight shipment for more warranty repairs so who knows.

As for S&W quality: I have a 686P 4" that I bought new earlier this year which is by far my favorite gun. I had a 637 that was also very high quality, but I didn't like the finish so it was traded for the 640. The odd-man-out is the 640, but S&W got it working and back to me faster than I would've expected (much quicker than the Ruger I sent back).

FWIW, I've been waiting over a week for a FedEx return label from SW. My 586-7 won't eject the casings...My dealer told me not to worry, they're slow! I'm worried... :o

Repaint the clearcoat, advise you on what bullet weight to use (some of their lightweight revolvers come with recommendations on what range of bullet weight to use), and return the revolver. Don't expect any promises as paint does wear and peel, and they have no control over what ammo you use. Also as the revolver is functioning as designed they will not swap you a brand new revolver for your used model. Your revolver would have to be unrepairable for them to consider replacing it.
