Send in the clones!

How interchangeable are the various Hi-Power clones? How interchangeable are the various 1911 clones? I'm getting another itch, something like starting with a pair of clones and upgrading the parts over the years...like the joke about having the same axe that has had 7 handles and 3 heads, or the same computer even though everything has been replaced/upgraded except the case.

I'd rather have two classic designs that I can shoot now for an affordable price than save up for a top-of-the-line or "name" piece. I've applied for C&R FFL so that's an option as well eventually.

I have two of the Feg Hi- Power clones . One for about six years - both guns have been quite reliable. I also have a Belgian Hi- Power and have switched slides from both guns to the Hi - power and shot them with no problem. Also the price was right on both these guns - half of what a Browning goes for.

FEG's PJK-9HP is parts compatible. At least I can vouch for magazines, firing pin, extractor and extractor spring ;)

Other FEG models are not parts-compatible, but at least the one is.

Go to www.fnhipower.com for more detailed info.

The Argentenian FM Hi Powers are supposed to be the closest copy. The only difference being the front section of the slide not being milled like a traditional HP. I understand these were made in Argentenia under license from Browning.

I have the FEG's PJK-9HP, and it appears to be 100% parts compatible, and that's the findings of others that own them too. For just over $200, it was a great deal, hard to go wrong...

I own and carry a FEG alot. That says I have confidence in it.

I had a frame on a FM go South on me. The pistol was refinished and the frame let go in the area where the magazine release is installed. Why? The FM is finished so rough my gunsmith had to over polish it. All the blemishes on the FM are covered by paint. If you want a good carry gun the FM will work. If you want a project piece look elsewhere.

Now for the best. What is it? The best of the clones is the Arcus 94. It is a great pistol that only has two faults. Again, what are they? 1) it's slide doesn't look like a BHP. 2) the Arcus 94 has very small sights. I am sure Sig P220-P229 sights will work on the Arcus 94.

Regards,

Richard

I had been researching the Arcus vs. FEG PJk-9HP and there was some discussion of reliability with the Arcus regarding +P ammo - I don't think it can handle it. No personal experience. I was thinking of gettin one of these two as well. Let us know your experiences with the Arcus. How much did you pay for it?

I bought my Arcus from CDNN for $210. This was years ago. I can only go by what my gunsmith said about the Arcus. What was that? The gunsmith said the Arcus 94 had good metal in it. He was not impressed with the metal in my FEG. I don't subject my High-Powers to a steady diet of +Ps so this isn't a concern for me. Regards, Richard
