Semiauto only for combat?

Would you feel underarmed in combat with a semiauto rifle firing an intermediate catridge?

I don't. We've been taught in the Guards to practically never use your M16 on full auto. Some of the weapons in our unit have little do-dads on the pistol grip that prevent the selector switch from going to the "AUTO" position.

So, basically, would you feel as comfortable going into a fight (any kind of a fight...CQB to WWI style open battlefield) with a semiauto only rifle like the Robinson M96, the VEPR II, the MAK-90, the AR-15, or the Mini-14 as you would any of their select-fire counterparts or comparable select fire weapons?

To be honest I would like to swap my trigger (issue M16A2) for a good semi auto only. I hate the way the burst trigger mechanism screwes up the trigger feel. The pull weight and feel changes every time I pull the trigger.

Only time full auto makes sense to me is for small arms air defense, clearing buildings and some ambush situations. Not a tremendous advantage in some of those situations even.

Would rather have a bigger cartridge for a rifle. Little cartridge great for sub gun.

Never had a problem with 16 in single/auto configuration. Our folks were used to and trained a lot with it. Even on auto rarely used more than two shots at a time. Operator training is a must when usin an auto weapon.

Sooooo, yeah, semi only just fine for most work.
