so im getting ready to have my rem 700 re-barreled w/a little action work, new timney trigger and a h.s. precision stock that will also be bedded. going with a hart barrel. haven't quite decided on the contour. I met with the smith today and during our discussion I mentioned that I do handload and was curious how the chambering process would go. he stated to bring in a dummy round of what I shoot so he could work with that. I mentioned I like to play with different lengths and bullets. he made it sound like i'm going to locked in with the 'dummy round' and how he cuts the chamber. i'm hoping I misunderstood him. any input on what he's referring to? I want the choice to load to the lands or off of them and not be locked into a single bullet. whats the best way to go here? should I have him match the existing chamber length of my rifle, since it seems to accommodate me hand loading different lengths and bullet types? totally new to the custom rifle end of things. am I missing something? probably so. lol!!

If your gunsmith reams a tighter chamber and you decide later to push the bullet into the rifling it could get very interesting for you.
Conversely if you seat it too short accuracy could be hurt. I have heard of a benchrest shooter breaking a record (600yard, IIRC) using bullets seated off the lands like .004 or so. But I cannot remember exactly.

I have a custom reamer from PT&G
http://www.6mmbr.com/kiffreamer.html

It is made for a specific bullet that I chose.

One guns has shot 0.2 moa with the wrong bullet.

All my other dozen reamers are just ordinary reamers.
They work just fine too.

270 is usually a hunting cartridge, and you are talking target?

In 270s I think I have a #1 taper 22" and a #3 taper 24" barrrels.
Those are light weight hunting barrels.
