Semi-automatic speed loader?

A friend of mine who is having trouble loading his clip for his Taurus PP 99AF 9 mm. wants to know if there is an auto speed loader for a semi-automatic like there is for a revolver. I told him I didn't know but if there is someone on "the firing line" would know. If there is, what's it called, where can he get one, and what's it cost?

It sounds like you're looking for a magazine loader, and there are several available that will make it easier (but not necessarily faster; for that you just carry a spare loaded magazine). Most of these are just open-sided plastic "boxes" that slip over the top of a magazine, and let you press down on the top round while you slip another round into the top spot. These are available under a couple of different names, but the ones that come to mind are "EZ-Loader" and "Super-Thumb". Try a search for either of these, and you should be able to get what you need.

magazine loader

I have an E-Z loader. It really saves my thumb. The one I have has a lever that provides the mechanical advantage for depressing the round in the magazine. I use the same loader for my Ruger 9mm and Walther 40 S&W magazines. I think I paid about $7.00 for it. They come in different sizes for different magazine manufacturers.

HKS makes magazine loaders for a variety of pistols. I use their model 940 for my SIG 229 with good results, although it takes some practice to load quickly. The HKS model 941 is probably the one your friend needs; MidwayUSA (http://www.midwayusa.com) has 'em for $9.99 (stock number 615-031).

I bought one from a man at the last Crossroads gunshow in Pheonix. It cost me $15, and was basically a piece of plastic about the size of your hand that had a 90 degree bend in it, with finger grooves molded on two edges, and holes drilled on the other two edges. There was this three legged doohickey that went into these holes and gave you something to push down on the top round in the mag. Although the man at the booth could work it like a champ, neither myself nor my roommate think (after we've used it a bit) that it is much easier than manually loading a magazine. Beware!

I can load faster with just my hands then I can with either of the two laoders mentioned. Tell your buddy to practice until he can do it blindfolded.

The magazine loading tool isn't just for speed, it also saves wear & tear on your thumbs. I've never worred how fast I can load with or without the magazine loader, since if TSHTF, I have plenty of loaded magazines already. :D
