Semi-Auto Shotgun ???

This may be more of a Mossberg question then semi-auto in general.

I just recently got a used Mossberg 5500 MkII. It is all put together and in what looks to be pretty good condition. I have a single question though. Are semi auto shotguns supposed to hold the bolt open each time if the action is worked by hand. Does the gas system have something to do with loading the next shell and closing the bolt on it? I have put shells in the gun and worked the action and the bolt holds open after I eject each shell. Now I am not sure if that is normal or not since I have always used pump and break barrel shotguns.

As Usual

You guys rock. No wonder why I spend most of my internet time here. Thanks now I know I got a deal on this Shotgun.

With shipping and FFL transfer and PICs and NICs check the gun cost me a whopping $40.

Some models

Some models will feed rounds from the mag by manualy cycling the bolt, some won't. Don't know about your model Mossberg. I have an Ithaca that holds open empty, but will feed a round from the mag by hand, in fact, that is how you are supposed to load it. Put two round in the mag, cycle the bolt, add last round to the mag. It only holds 3. I think Remingtons are this way as well, but they hold more shells.
