Semi-Auto Pistol Cleaning

I am sure this has been asked to death, but here goes again...

I have the following questions regarding pistol-cleaning.

For practical (meaning, not for aesthetic or "anal-retentive") purpose, how clean should I semi-auto pistol be for safe, reliable and rust-free operations?

How well should the barrel be cleaned? The action? The exterior?

When in doubt, hose the whole thing down with Gun Scrubber and re-lube at the factory specified points.

Caveat regarding Gun Scrubber:

Gun Scrubber and similar products have a fondness for eating away certain plastics and the white rings around tritium sight inserts.

I think gun scrubber is wonderful, but I only use it on a stripped pistol with all plastics removed. It seems that alot of sprays are sold as a shortcut for cleaning but you have to be real careful!
