I was checking out a smith revolver and they look great, I would like something that I can just load up and put away until I need it only problem is all of my pistols are in .45 or .22 and I want to keep it that way because I am all setup for reloading .45auto does anyone here know of a company that makes a revolver in .45long colt that you can also shoot 45 auto out of so for home defense I can load up with .45auto and for camping, backpacking i can load up with some hot .45 long colt rounds?

I don't know anything about revolvers so enlighten me, is this a impossible task?

Just in case you didn't know your gonna have a to have a different cylinder for each round with the acp/colt switch. Might be easier to just get a 45 auto revolver and look into 45 rowland or Super options.

S&W makes a DA revolver that fires strictly .45 ACP, and uses moon clips (which I hate--moon clips are a pain in the rear IMO) . There are no DA revolvers that I know of that can fire BOTH .45 LR AND .45 ACP. Your best bet for a .45 ACP only revolver is the S&W revolver (forgot model #).

If you are ok with single action (I actually PREFER single action), then check out the Ruger Blackhawk and Vaquero (special edition from Davidson). They can fire both .45 ACP and .45 LC by changing cylinders.

The S&W .45 acp 625 with moonclips is the revolver Jerry Miculek used to do 6 shots/reload/6 shots in 2.9 seconds with all 12 rounds nicely clustered at 5 yds. This is a favorite with competitors that don't do .38 spl./.357 magnums.

Loading rounds and unloading brass in moonclips is almost as slow as loading mags for autos, but they make reloads very quick. The rounds/brass go in/eject as a unit and the total mass makes the operation very positive.

Where can they be found?
Can they be ordered though my local FFL?

The "Davidson's Special Runs" of double-caliber 45 Vaqueros turn up on the online auction houses now and then. So far as I know, Davidson's doesn't have any more but you could ask:

Here's a stainless 5.5":

And a 4.6":

Poke around www.gunbroker.com / www.auctionarms.com / www.gunsamerica.com - some were blue, some stainless.

I got curious as to how many of these are floating around:

GunsAmerica is a classifieds system versus auction, so those are asking prices. Seems like the stainless specimens are running over $100 more than blue?

'Cept for this guy:

Here's a real oddball: .40S&W Vaquero anyone?

Could be converted to 10mm by any decent gunsmith in minutes :).

also if you want a slightly smaller gun than a smith N-frame

Taurus makes the tracker in 45 acp now as well. Its a 5 shot but handles well. You can use these guns (both the taurus and S&W with or with out the clips to shoot 45 acp rounds. the downside is without the clips ejection is one at a time using a pencil or your fingernail to pry the empty cases out (without moonclips the extractor star has nothing to catch on and eject the cases. I have an older model 1917 smith and plan on adding a Tracker to my battery soon.

Oh yeah, back to the original topic. There is a round called .45AutoRim that is a .45ACP with a rim, a large rim, that will run in the 625 with out moon clips. Just like a short 45LC.
The use of moon clips made for a lot of space at the back of the cylinder so the rim of the 45AR is very thick. Because of the difference in rim thickness between the 45LC and the 45AR they are not inter-changable like the 38/357 or 44spec/44mag.
BTW PMC manufactures 45AR ammunition. The only load I've seen is a 185gr FMJ SWC design. So if you don't like moon clips and don't reload, you still have a factory ammo alternative. If you do reload, you need only change the shell plate from the ACP. I have some Remington 45AR brass that has been loaded and shot 10 times and still looks fine.

Gary Reeder teamed up with Rodger Hunsiker of Phillips and Rodgers (Makers of the medusa multi-ammo revolver), and Gary offers a completed gun that shoots .45acp, and .45 colt (Also 45 Schofield.) without the use of moon clips of any kind, through a custom cylinder, not two cylinders.
A 6 shooter. It's a bit pricey, being all custom, though.

It's typical SA ruger, but I'm sure it's a tank.

Davidsons has two convertible Vaquero versions right now. Stainless steel 4 5/8th inch barrel, and 5.5" barrel. Both have .45 ACP and .45 LC cylinders.

Your local FFL can order via Davidsons if he has an account with them. People without FFLs can NOT order via Davidsons. If you want one of these guns, find a FFL that has an account with Davidsons (meaning he routinely orders guns from Davidsons distributor).

My dad has a fairly old S&W 6", the barell is marked .455 webley, he's got ACP and LC cyclinders for it as well. They existed at some point, not sure what they are worth though.
