Semi-Auto barrel question #1 (pic).

I have a Sig 229 .40s&w and I have noticed these swirl type marks on the barrel itself. These marks are not grooved in, but are as smooth as the rest of the barrel is. I have noticed them mostly on my Sig, but I have a Glock 19c which has some slight swirl type marks as well.

Any ideas what these smooth swirl marks come from? Any ideas how to prevent them? How to remove them?

John is absolutely correct.

When the barrel begins to unlock and tip down at the rear, it is no uncommon for the muzzle end to whip upwards. When this happens, and the slide is coming back, you get wear marks.

My new EAA Witness 10mm has those after only 50 rounds at the range yesterday. They're faint, but they're there.

This is normal for any auto pistol with slide to barrel contact. Use a good lubricant on this spot sparingly and the gun will give you many years of good reliable service.
