Semi-add ons

With my ageing eyesight I am considering adding a shooting aid to one of my 2 semi auto carry guns. One is a Ruger SR 9c and the other a Springfield XDs. I have been looking into mounting a red dot to one of them but I have been told that neither one is especially conducive for that. My other option is a laser.

I have not had any experience with either method and wanted some feedback from members with what they thought. Of course cost for me is also a factor to consider .

Thanks for your time

In my late 60's now...and bad eyesight is just part of it / but I don't like either of your options / I have tried lasers and red dots and neither one worked.

Personally, I went with better sights, easier to acquire with my eyesight issues. A Wider rear sight ( Wilson combat's battle sight is my choice )...and for a front sight on one gun I went with a Red Fibre Optic...and on other one I went with a Gold Bead.

I like both the red Fibre Optic ...and the Gold Bead...but I'm finding the Gold Bead is the best of the two. Both show up in low light very well....and I'm finding the Gold Bead is a little quicker on lining things up after I draw...

I like red dots for target shooting or plinking.

I tried a laser for a while and did not like it. IMhO go with what BigJimP said.

Fun fact about lasers...you can really humiliate yourself at the range with one.

HOWEVER...we watched one shooter whose laser was all over the target, he was shooting at 50 feet, then when he reeled in the target he had a VERY respectable group. We talked to him later and he said he was using his son-in-law's gun and didn't even know the laser was on. He attributed the wavering laser to his age (he was old but wouldn't say how old) and his tight group to trigger control. "I wait for the bulls eye to come around and only then increase trigger pressure. Seems to work."

I guess so.

71+ here and not a fan of optical sights on handguns. Opening up the rear sight is one option that's easy to do with a fine file, or white/tritium dots on both front and rear would work as well...they do for me...I'm not a fan of the fiber front sights however. Too bright in sunlight...doesn't give me the precision that I want. But if you're satisfied with combat accuracy out to 15 yds, the red fiber types would work. Best regards, Rod

I've been looking at "seeall open sights" recently. I would probably put one a rifle before a pistol but its an interesting idea. Reviews seem to be mixed though.

Thanks for all the input. I may take a trip to my local gun range and see it they have a pistol with optics for me to try out to see if it works for me.
