Selling with online broker

Could anyone share their experience selling a used gun through an online broker such as gunbroker.com?

I'm not clear on how a gun registered in my name at the local police department, state and federal level gets transferred to a new owner so that it is no longer registered in my name.

Thanks

With the exception of NFA items (silencers, destructive devices, machine guns, etc) there is no federal gun registration.

Since VERY few states/cities/counties require actual registration of firearms you'll have to be specific about where you live.

Most states (like Texas), when you sell your firearm, you merely ship it to a dealer (FFL) in another state where you buyer will fill out the 4473 (ATF transaction form), do the NICS check and he walks out with the gun.

Some states require you to use a dealer to ship the firearm (that is state law not federal).

I have sold 2 pistols via gunbroker. In NY, all handguns are registered to the individual pistol permit holder. I transfered my pistols to via NYS firearms dealer/FFL holder, who gave me a reciept of transfer for the pistol. My FFL then shipped the pistol to the buyers FFL holder. Once in possession of the reciept I stopped by my county pistol permit office and they removed it from my permit.

When I sold rifles, it was straight up shipment to the buyers FFL.

I'm in Jersey City, and I had to register my gun with the local police department and with the state. I must have been confused about the federal registration.
