sell me on a cheap handgun.

hello all,
ok so many of you might already know that for some reason I am a cheap bugger that likes to buy cheap handguns, and usually whine about the results afterwards. so I'm looking for input on the next one. so far I have purchased the Canik TP9(first gen), and TP9SF, the Ruger 9E, and the Arcus 98DA. I am looking for a fresh design, 9mm for less than $400(brand new only, I am not looking for used so please don't tell me to look for a police trade in glock). hammer or striker, metal or poly frame, makes no difference to me. I would prefer service sized handguns with at least a 4 inch slide. gun's I've considered and decided against include the S&W sigma lines, FMK 9C1, EAA Witness and SAR, and pretty much all taurus's, Hi Points, and Keltecs. I have considered the Stoeger Cougar, and it is still very much on my radar.

so, go ahead and make me buy more junk I don't need.

IMHO a Taurus PT92 is a good buy. Maybe an Arcus 94 (single action). I have been looking at the Grand Power K100.

The new Walther Creed or PPX are great guns with awesome ergonomics and a great trigger. 4" barrel 15rd capacity for $320-350. Also the Sig 2022 is awesome for just around $500.

I would recommend you buy the Sig Sauer P250 in 9mm Luger.
I do have the S&W SD9VE and that gun works as reliable as an Glock. I not even got to limb wrist it even if I tried it hard. It shoots low though but if you reload you can adjust your loads to remedy that.

I think a BERSA HC9 would be perfect for you. Loosely based off of and resembling the Walther P88, typically have nice DA/SA triggers, come in black or shiny color options.

For any particular purpose, or you just want to throw money down a rat hole on a 'fresh design' that's cheap? Maybe you can further define what a 'fresh design' is. You want pink G-10 grips with gold screws and a bunch of slots milled in the slide...or are you trying to meet some neighborhood goal of number of crap guns in the safe? All equally valid objectives, I'm sure.

fresh meaning one I do not own, and not a similar model to what I already own made by another company. no I'm not looking for gawdy but I kindof like the neighborhood goal of crap guns in the safe so lets go with that.

I like the 2022. I bought one a few years back with the big holster, extra mag, "factory" laser/ light for $550. While inexpensive it runs like a top. I do have a couple of complaints:

- Pinches the hand on rapid reload
- mags are ridiculous expensive and proprietary

At $400 you can just get a full size Glock or M&P retread.

As mentioned above, the Taurus PT92 is a solid pistol. I have had one since 1989 or so and it still functions perfectly.

Someone else mentioned the S&W SD9VE. I had the 40 caliber version. The trigger wasn't my favorite, but it went bang every time. The magazine was good quality, too.

Why did you talk yourself out of the EAA Witness? I have dozens of center fire semi-auto pistols, and my Witness is my favorite.

I am cheap too. I have a lot of nice handguns that I got for $300 or less by being patient and keeping my eyes open. In my experience military/police surplus pistols have been the best deals. They tend to be rugged no-nonsense service pistols that have been carried a lot and shot seldom. For instance, my FiL and I both got Star Super B's for around $250 OTD. They are well-made reliable accurate pistols. His even turned out to be NIB!

Good luck on your quest. My current goal is to find an old Colt revolver that is a good shooter for $200 or less. I will keep being patient and will find one eventually.

If you're willing to shop online and can wait for a good deal you could probably find a new Smith & Wesson M&P or Springfield XD for $400 or a little less. If you are willing to go subcompact, PSA has a subcompact XD 9mm for $370 plus shipping right now. If you spent about the same on shipping and transfer as I usually do when I buy from them that comes out to about $405 out the door. Similar deals can be found on M&Ps but they come up a little more rarely.

You already have a 9E, but the sweet spot in the SR series are the compacts. They are certainly not junk, yet sell at a price that would meet your requirements. They have the additional benefit of being dependable, well made pistols. I just noticed your 4" requirement. With the higher capacity mags and grip extension you might not notice the difference. Just my thoughts.

I have both the Stoeger Cougar 9mm 8000F and the 45acp 8045. Both excellent guns, have been totally reliable, accurate and quality as good as my Beretta PX4 and 92FS.

Walther PPX: The theoretic artful nature of the P99s and PPQ's with a DAO spurless hammer to initiate one to the fold of German engineering.

Fresh design? Remington R51. or better, Walther CCP.

Not so fresh design, but it works pretty well: XDS 9 w/ 4 inch barrel.

IF you could find a P-07 or 09 somewhere in the low 400 range you'd be overjoyed to have sprung for the few extra dollars.

Wanna know why? Because these are top grade pistols at an awesome price.
