Arts, there are probably 100 (+) threads on that subject here. The majority agree that any good pump or semi-auto will suffice. Truthfully, as long as the SG will chamber and fire two in a row, it'll work.

As an observation, I think it is limiting discussion to lock a thread and suggest reference to the search feature. First of all the membership is increasing daily and there is a lot more expertise here today than there was even yesterday.
My suggestion would be to resort to the search feature only if there are no replies to a question.
To be honest, I think such a reply can suppress or repress further discussion.
The archives are a vital part of TFL, but I don't think new posters should be restricted to its use.

As was stated, do a search and you'll find more information than you would like. Its absolutely mind-boggling!!!
What I have found is that you'll be perfectly happy with any of the "Big name" manufacturers; Winchester, Remington, and Mossberg. There are a few others, but I forget.
I just got a Mossberg model 88. Taken it to the range several times without a hint of a problem. It was only $200. Compare that with the cost of a Brinks or whatever electronic "security" system, and you'll definitely see which is the better value. (And more fun!!!

I personally far prefer the looks of the Mossbergs to any others. They are about as solid and reliable as a brick, and anyone on the business end of one will feel as if they've just been shot with a brick.
Oh, this is important: be sure to get lots of range-time with your new 12!!! They kick a LOT more than you would think, however, it DOES get better with experience. I would recommend no less than probably 1-200 rounds MINIMUM.

This model does not accept law enforcement accessories. Big deal. Four rounds of # 1 buckshot in a stock 870 are quite adequate for HD, IMHO.
In the highly unlikely event that additional firepower is needed, there'll be another shotgun and four revolvers in the safe room.

Any of the Big Four(Remington 870, Winchester 1200/1300, Mossberg 500-590 and the Ithaca 37) are SUPERB close range defensive weapons in trained, responsible hands.
Training is much, much more crucial than brand, accessories, mods or what the latest gun of choice is down at the local range/shop.
Shotguns are MOST effective when operated from the shoulder and aimed. Spread is miniscule and choke unimportant at typical ranges. The load will hit as a solid or semi solid projectile and dump an incredible amount of energy into the target. THIS is the big reason to employ a shotgun, high percentage (99%plus) one shot stops.
As for cost, police turnins(usually 870s) are the best bargain out there.Oft beatup on the outside, they're nearly new inside most of the time. Two of my 4 12 gauge 870s started as agency weapons.
Get the shotgun that FEELS best from that short list of the Big Four. Shoot it until it feels like a body part instead of a tool. At that point, brand is a moot issue, effectiveness is a given....
