Clay games are excellent for poearning handling, don't underestimate them.
Try this....
Set up 5 tombstone targets from 10-25 yards distant, and at least one target width apart.
Starting from cruiser ready with four rounds in the mag,chamber empty,safety on,action locked,fire one round into four targets, combat load one round by throwing it into the ejection port and firing the fifth round.
Try it from a chamber loaded condition, then time both. Use any practice ammo you want to, but make at least one test with your HD load.
Next,try it from the off shoulder....

Luckily, we have a three gun match. It lets you practice shooting but is not really indicative of tactical shotgun. First thing you need to do is test the patterning and/ or shooting of the different HD shotgun shells that you plan to use. #00 Buck, #2, #4, slugs, whatever. This tells you what they do at what distances. Secondly, you need to practice shooting, loading from the side saddle or reloading on the move. Coming down a hallway, cornering, room clearing, tactical at the ready carrying and bringing to shooting position. In the shooting pits,I set up barrels and wall barricades and pretend to clear the house. I shoot from behind cover whenever possible and learn how BALANCE is important when shooting and toting a shotgun. Shooting stationary tombstone targets is another good way. But really doesn't give anything but bullseye practice. I believe one should practice with what they carry in real life. Practicing with a low recoil shot when you are using magnum is okay but you should shoot at least half or more of your course with the ammo that will save your life. Just my two or in this case four cents.

lol Dave I thought I was the only guy who did that "combat reload" at the range (only I'll do it shooting clays) 
wasn't that in the movie "platoon leader"?.. anyway my brother and I can both yell "pull".. flip the shell in.. close the action and bust birds thanks to seeing that movie.. I've even tried that with TWO rounds and shoot a double but its pretty easy to get fumble-fingered after the first shot.
Good idea on the "tombstone" range... what distances are you recommending??

10 to 25 yards is good, one could add a close target for variety,say just past contact ranges.
Learned that combat load working for the govt. It works under pressure.
'Nother tip, try re running the course of fire after running in place until you can feel your pulse and are breathing heavily. This simulates combat to an extent.
