Self-Defense Options for Out of State Travel

I'm starting a new job and they are planning to send me to N.Carolina for 4 days of training (I live in Cal).

I would like to open it up for discussion, what self-defense options do I have?

At minimum, I'll pack my Spyderco Matriarch in my check-in luggage. But can I bring my G30 in my check-in luggage as well? I believe you have to declare that you are carrying a firearm in your luggage but do you need anything else? I've never brought a firearm on a plane trip so I have no idea.

Any info would be appreciated.

First, visit http://www.packing.org/ for information concerning the laws in NC. Then, go to your airline's website or call them up for instructions (you might do both).

I've only done this once, and it was from one gun-friendly state to another. It was a breeze. At IAH here, airport security just nonchalantly directed me to 1st class ticketing area, counter guy had me open the case and show him my Model 60 was unloaded, handed me my orange stealme tag and told me I could put it inside the suitcase. Locked the guncase and the suitcase, he put it on the conveyor and that was it. On arrival, kept the gun in the suitcase in the trunk of the rental til I hit the KY border, where my CCW is honored. Return trip was similar. At BNA (Nashville), they just brought me to an empty counter. It was a couple of young ladies behind the counter, no funny looks or expressions of distaste or anything of the sort. Stealme tag went inside the gun case this time.

BTW, I was nervous and sweaty as hell in both airports but nobody hassled me. Also, I have a hand tremor which I can compensate for when I shoot, but it makes folks who don't know think I'm nervous anyway. On the positive side, I look like a fat middleaged whiteboy who works with computers (what a surprise), I wear business casual when I travel (Dockers, button shirt, loafers or boots), always purchase tickets way in advance, and go out of my way to be polite.

Oh- I also carry a little KISS folder, Cold Steel Voyager or Spyderco Delica in my pocket onto the plane. Only ever had trouble at Albuquerque, where some nitwit cut himself on the KISS "inspecting" it.
