Help: I need advice!

I want to buy a precision bolt action rifle.
My main concern is long-range accuracy.
I have the choice between the following 3 rifles.
Please recommend one of the following and also should I buy 223 or 308?

1). Winchester 70 Stealth (heavy) barrel length 26” / magazine
2). Remington 700-PSS barrel length 26” / floor plate
3). Remington 700-PSS (flutted) barrel length 20” / floor plate

Please respond in detail. Many thanks,
Friz

Friz,
Both manufacturers you've mentioned are worth owning.
You need to better define the range you're going to shoot before a caliber choice can be made.
The 308 is going to allow consistant shooting to 1000 yards with quality ammunition and optics.
The 223 is going to limit you to 500 yards with factory ammunition, and 600 yards with reloads, maybe 800 yards with heavy bullets in warm temps. In either caliber, the 20 inch barrel is going to reduce velocities, therefore effective accurate range, considerably.

More info?

I'd go with the Remington 700 LTR in .308. It's lightness makes it easier to carry around all day than a 26" barrel gun. Further, it'll reach out to 600 yards which is about the maximum you'd probably be shooting anyway. JMHO.

I have a Rem 700 VS. Here is El Rojo shooting his Rem 700 VS for a 1000 yard shoot. He scored 385-10x off of his bipod. Only problem was the Leupold LRT scope is still just barely off for 1000 yards and I had to hold a little ways over the target to compensate. Make sure if you really want to shoot long range, you either shim your base or buy special tilted bases.

I'd just buy a new action and go from there. That way you can pick the barrel make, grade, material, profile, length, caliber, twist finish. Then you can get the perfect stock, and add the perfect trigger.

I wouldn't buy a "precision" rifle off of the shelf.
