See Stossel's Give Me a Break report last night?

about how car dealers have gotten the legislatures in 49 states to pass laws prohibiting the direct sale of cars to the consumer from the manufacturer, which artificially drives prices up with the high-overhead middleman? It got me steamed. Vehicles would be tons less $ if we could buy direct.

Stossel ripped the NADA guy a new one with his questions, though:
"Why shouldn't we be able to eliminate the middle man?"
"Because car dealers give good service...."
"But I don't want any service..."
"Well it would put a lot of dealers out of business..."
"So what? The internet has put lots of middle men out of business."

The guy could not give one reason for the law, other than featherbedding.

Didn't see it, but I do think Stossel is about the only network reporter who has a clue. He's about the only TV reporter I'll watch. The rest are generally either at the level of the National Enquirer (e.g. all the Jon-Benet reporting), committed socialists (Rather), or both.

Jim:
I gotta agree with you. Stossel just about the only reporter out there who asks tough questions any more. Occasionally a reporter will ask the tough questions, but mostly they act like lap dogs.

I'm writing my state reps. What is this crap? I've only gotten horrid service from car dealers. I'm in a battle with one right now over a braking noise with a new car. The lying dogs won't do anything to fix it. I'd gladly buy a car direct and avoid contact with the pack of wolves I've dealt with in the past.

I wonder if this idea might ever catch on in my favorite industry. I'll handle my own service work on my Sigs, Colts etc.

RKBA!

Victor,
I saw Stossel do a couple of stories on guns. The two I saw plainly had the message that the problem was not the gun. He even argued a little about it with Barbara Walters, and in the end she agreed with him. Has he done some anti stories I'm not aware of? If so I'd like to know, cause I thought he was "alright".

Stossel's done a lot of libertarian pieces for TV. You can buy his videos from Laissez-Faire Books.

If I remeber correctly our own BestDefense357 (Robert Waters) was being interviewed by Stossel for a special on guns.

His segment on the overblown media coverage of Colombine was the best news report I have ever seen. That was the one that got Barbara Walters to admit he had a point.
