first off id like to say hi to everyone, im a long time lurker who thought i knew about firearms till i found this site, ive learned alot more since ive been reading here. anyway i just purchaced a new to me ruger security six and i have a few questions.

1. my gun has the 150 prefix, and acording to what ive read im sol when it comes to buying grips for my new gun. the stock grips fit my hand very well but i would definitely prefer some smooth wood grips as opposed to the checkered ones, and was hoping one of ya could steer me in the right direction.

2. my local dealer recomended cor-bon 110gr for sd, being that my gun is fairly old, are these rounds safe?...not that i dont trust my dealer, but cor-bon is what he sells, i asked him about rem golden sabers and he said they were crap...is that just becuse he does not carry them?

3. i also wanted to pick up some cheap 38s for plinking and found black hills ammo 158gr lwcs, oppon arriving home i noticed these are reloads, does anyone have experince with this company? ive never shot reloads before

thanks in advance
d-mac

btw the security six appears to be in great shape, a slight ring around the cyl and a little bit of holster wear but still appears tight, points well, feels very balanced in my hand, and for $260 i think was a pretty good deal

Hi, d-mac, and welcome. I love my Security Six. It's a honey. I, too, am looking for the same grips. You may find, though, that snappy loads aren't handled too well by the factory grips. Before getting new woods, I'd install a set of rubber grips from Hogue or Pachmyr first. They're inexpensive and soak up the recoil of harsh loads much better.

If a dealer tells you that any major brand product is "crap", find another dealer. He's entitled to his opinion, of course, but you would be better served by someone who can explain why he prefers certain loads over others. That helps you as a shooter, right?

Blue box Black Hills ammo is fine. They're a great company, and the reloads give you a chance to fire some quality ammo at a reduced price. For general shooting, you can find plenty of good stuff. I've shot Winchester white box, Magtech, and Federal American Eagle the most for practice and non-competitive target work.

I love my Security Six (4", .357, blue, pach's)

I bought a beat up old duty turn in back in January, a 4" blued .357 Security Six w/ pachmayr grips, for $189!

I went in to buy a $179 Makarov in 9mm Mak, but am glad I looked down below the case and saw this beater!

Guy at the counter called it old and ugly, and tossed me a newer .38 S&W 4", nickel plated, wood grips, for about $289.

I bought the Ruger, named her "Old Ugly", and proceeded to shoot a box of .38 round nose target, .38 +p personal defense ammo, and some hot 125gr (or was it 115?) .357. The grips take up the recoil, and it was awesome to shoot w/ each type of ammo.

I love my Six, and am looking for a snubby to go w/ it.

Enjoy your Ruger. They're overbuilt, and should handle just about anything you put through it. You may need to locktite the extractor rod, or take some pliers and leather and wrap the end and tighten it way up (S&W trick I read about), so it doesn't back out on you and hang up the cylinder on extraction.

make sure you know how old your revolver is. for the first couple of years the security six had a different grip frame than the rest of the production run. most companies do not make grips for the first couple of years production.

Welcome to the world of the Security Six, one of the best kept secrets in used handguns. They were great guns new and they are a great bargain used.

As steveno stated, the 150 pre-fix guns have a different grip shape than the 151 pre-fix guns. It can be fairly hard to find grips for the 150 guns.

I modified the grip frame on my 150 gun to accept 151 grips. It's a fairly easy job. I scribed the outline of the 151 grips then used a bench grinder to rough it into shape. I used a Dremel to do the final shapping. I followed up with various grades of sandpaper to remove any scratches and to polish things up. I followed up with cold blueing. It turned out great. Take your time (slow and easy) and no one will be able to tell the frame was modified.

Also, you could get some grip blanks and shape them by hand to fit. Nothing feels better than makin something yourself.

Security Six

I had a Security Six stolen from me, the same year Ruger discontinued it. The 2 3/4 inch stainless gun shot excellent but, I added a few quirks.
I clipped two links off the main spring, so it would only fire with Federal Primers. I had a Yellow front sight insert installed.
With those 2 destinguishing modifications...I would hate to be a 3rd hand owner, not knowing about the "quirks".
Get a set of Pachamyer grips.

thanks for all the info guys, i would definatley not feel comfertable trying any modification to the frame, does pachamyer make grips for the early six are would they have to be modified. as for making my own out of blanks, i can imagine pulling splinters out of my hand after my first shot as my grips disenagrate due to incompetence...lol

sturm i just checked that site and they have exactly what i want, but it does not say if there for the early 150 prefix guns

Another "Welcome Aboard," d-mac

I'll second Sturm's suggestion about CDNN. I've ordered from them a few times and was very impressed with their very prompt service.

I suggest you pick out the product you like best, plus at least one alternate choice. Then phone CDNN for your order and express your concern about the frame variant. Ask the call taker for his/her suggestion. Have your questions ready and don't expect a lengthy chat - - They are always courteous, but time is money - - They want to get your order information and then clear the line. ;)

I've always been ilmpressed with the Ruger Security Six and its brothers, Service Six and Speed Six.

Best of luck to you.

Although it doesn't say so on the CDNN web site, the sales catalouge i received in the mail states they will not fit the 150 pre-fix guns. CDNN has some great grips though. I've bought a pair for my Security Six (151 pre-fix) and a J frame S&W.

Some of the older grips like Herrets and Mustang were made to fit both 150 and 151 pre-fix guns. I bought a pair of Mustang walnut grips off e-bay for a very reasonable price. They fit both 150 and 151 guns. Ofcourse i didn't know that untill i had already modified the 150 gun. One way to tell if they will fit both guns is they have two grip pin holes.

First of all, congrats on a great revolver! The Ruger "Six" line is one of my favorites. I have three of them.

They are heck for stout, so you should have no problems at all running those Corbon loads through it.

As for grips, 150 series grips are quite hard to find. I would suggest surfing ebay and also perhaps a post over at www.rugerforum.com and see if the experts over there have any different advice. Mustang and Jay Scott used to make grips for the 150 series, so there are some floating around out there.

hey yo

D-Mac where did you find a security six? I thoug ruger stopped making those. Are they on the site? I never saw them. I have always been curious about those things. :)

On eBay, look for Herrett's "Shooting Stars' grips for the old Security Six(150 series)! The way to tell, is that on the Herrett's box, it will state for the old or for the new security and Service Six revolves(In small wording)and, with the code RSS(In capital letters=meaning Ruger Security Six)! These same Herrett's grips for the new Security Six and Service Six, will state this(Again, in small lettered wording)on the box and, with the code RNSS(In capital letters=meaning Ruger New Security Six)! Again, these grips will fit both the Security Six and the Service Six(Also called the Police Service Six)in both the 150 series and in the 151 series! To make it more clear, 150 series=RSS and 151 series=RNSS!

NOTE: I have purchased these two variations of the herrett's "Shooting Stars" grips for both my 150 and 151 series Security Six and Service Sixes off of eBay! I have seen these from time to time on eBay up for auction! These are very nice looking(And are high quality)grips, that fit well too! If you see these grips on eBay and if they are not in a box, contact the seller, to ask him to look on the backside of whatever grips he is selling, to see if a sticker is marked as RSS or RNSS(Or, if he already knows whether his Herrett's "Shooting Stars" grips fit the 150 or the 150 series, Security Six and Service Sixes)? :D

Te Anau:

1)The series(Serial number prefix)150 or 151, doesn't determine whether the grip frame is a square butt or round butt! The 150 serial number prefix, only determines if the revolver is an early model(And, by the same token, 151(And up!)) series points to a newer model revolver! The early model 150 series has a larger(And different shaped)grip frame than the newer model 151(And up)series grip frame!

2)There are only three versions of Ruger "Six Series" revolvers, Security Six, Service Six, and Speed Six! The Speed Six, is the only model that has the round butt grip frame! Both the Security Six and the Service Six(Also called the Police Service Six)have the identical, square butt grip frame!

Security Six

I have had 2 Security Six. One I sold when money got tight. The other was stolen.
I have put reloads through the 6 inch and the 2 3/4 inchers, that will cause a "K" Fraame to fall appart. The Security Six will take the load.

I've got a 6" Security Six and also have a Speed Six, both are great revolvers. The Remington Golden Sabers are a good round, nothing wrong with that ammo at all.
