Security Six

I have the opportunity to buy a Ruger Security Six, 2 3/4" barel, 357mag. I like the gun and have shot it. Asking price is $200, its nickel, in great condition. Any thoughts on this gun and this deal?
Besides being another gun in my meager collection, it will be a secondary carry, a gun that I can leave my wife when I take my primary carry (Taurus mod 85), and a great camping/hiking gun since its in .357 and a six shot (vs. my Mod 85's 5 shots of .38).

(the picture looks like there is pitting, but there isn't any, I think those are my fingerprints being picked up by the camera flash)

Atc1man,

I have had a 4 inch Security Six since 1987. It was my first pistol when I turned 21. I was in the Army and my CO had to sign off so I could buy it. I love that pistol and would not part with it. Teddy Jacobson has it as I type just refining it a bit. I have shot the crap out of it and its still tight and accurate. Price sounds fair I don't think you can go wrong if its in your budget. Even if you could get one a little cheaper you all ready know you like this one. Shoot if you don't scoop it up let me know I might be interested.

Had a security six for about 3 years, good shooter, only reason I got rid of it is I was made and offer I couldn't refuse.

I have the exact same gun and I love it. It was my first firearm ever and I, frankly, wouldn't have it any other way. A wonderful weapon, highly dependable, nicely accurate and indisputably effective. In fact, I think I'm going to go dig it out of the archives and have a few dry-fires, just to bring back the memories.

Dan,
Maybe during the winter...I have trouble hiding most guns because of my 5'3" medium build frame. My Taurus snubbie fits me oh so well for carry during summer.....I sold a Ruger P95 just so I could get the snubbie. I now carry 80% of the time, vs. 20% of the time with the Ruger auto. The Security would probably be okay unless I was shorts and tshirt...then the snubbie probably would need to go with me....
Thanks for the advice, I'll snatch it up. Going to shoot it again this weekend, as well as help the same friend who's selling it sight in his Mini14's new scope :D

$200? Buy it!! I sold mine (stupid decision) for $250 several years ago and really regret it.

Get it, shoot it, love it.

VERY NICE!!
I have a Police Servcice Six snubby that I love. I've shot it extensively with a wide range of loads and it shoots very well. It is still in great shape.
You could conceal that Security Six with a good IWB holster. I've taken to a cross draw that works better for me than behind the hip. Of course, I have Dunlaps disease so that helps too!!
Have fun with your new gun. Love those Rugers - especially the old ones.

I generally shy away from nickel finishes. They flashing and look wonderful on Colt single actions, but they are a bear to keep clean. My dad had a nickel Python and used to joke that if you even thought about touching it, a fingerprint would appear.

$200 seems to be a good price to me. I've been seeing used stainless versions for $250 at recent gunshows. I actually prefer security sixes to the GP100s.

that sounds like a price i'd jump on in a heartbeat...even if it has been nickled. i've never even heard of ruger offering a nickle finish on any of their "six series ". so i agree, either polished stainless or aftermarket nickle.

i think the "six series" is the perfect combination of size and strenght for the .357mag...and this is from a hugh python fan

Another vote for snatch it before it gets away ... if not, tell us where it is and we someone in here will.

It's a great piece.

I've owned a Security Six since they came out many years ago and they're tough, durable and well made guns. I own a 4" stainless and a 2 3/4" Speed Six which is basically the same gun except with fixed sights.
