Security Six Questions

First off, I'm new to shooting. Purchased a Security Six today. It's got the molded rubber grips. What's the trick to removing them? I downloaded the User Manual from Ruger, but they do not address this type of grip. Also, for the life of me, I can't locate the serial number. Will the removal of the grips lead to the discovery of the serial number?

That makes sense--but how about removing the grips. There are no screws. What's holding them on?

The Pachmeyers that I have on my Security Six have several arrowhead shaped noduals on one side & pop-in holes corresponding on the other grip. Just get your thumbnail between the two sides of the grip & pull them apart.

I don't think the Security Six ever came with rubber grips from the factory. If you have hogues, like I do, look on the bottom of the grip for a single screw. By the way, excellent choice!

It was the arrowhead type fasteners as suggested by fastforty. Also found the Ser. Number. Thanks for your help!

Dasmi:

Yes, the Security-Six did have a model that came from the factory with rubber grips. They were made by Pachmayer(But had Ruger emblems)and were the(Small size)presentation grips(Without finger grooves)! Ruger also offered these as accessories parts! I ordered a couple of sets of these from Ruger in the late 1990's for my Security-Sixes. :D

Congrats on the Ruger Six. In my opinion, you now have the only DA Revolver Ruger ever made I would own. They have a good trigger, svelte design, and good ergonomics. I believe Ruger really dropped the ball when they dropped these guns for the ugly, obese abominations they called improvements, the GP100 and SP101.

Good luck with that beauty, and happy shooting.

If you are replacing the grips, some will not fit over the takedown pin. Here is one I restored a couple of months ago. The other pic is the same gun in eagle grips...

The Six series Rugers are great revolvers, and you will be very happy with it.

Check www.cdnnsports.com

They have the Ruger rubber grips for Six series revolvers thet come with the Ruger medalions. I have 2 pairs, one on my Speed Six and one on my Security Six. They are the best rubber grips I have ever used, and the only ones I really like.

These revolvers seem to just improve with age and use. Enjoy it.

The Service Six has fixed sights. The Security Six has adjustable sights.

The Service Six/Speed Six/ Six/Security Six were some great guns when new . Now they're great used guns.

Around here a blued Security Six is going for around $175 to $200 for a decent gun. Stainless ones are going for around $225. A couple of years ago i could find blued guns for $100 to $125 depending of their condition. A nice stainless gun could be had for around $150. It seems every one has discovered (or mayde rediscovered) what great guns they are.

Ruger replaced the six series guns with the GP100. The GP100 is a little bigger and heavier than the Security Six, and supposadly stronger. I own 2 Security Six's and a GP100. Personally i like the feel of the Security Six alot better than the GP100.

I like sixes

I like the way the sixes look and I like how smooth the trigger is (i got to shoot my uncles) even in DA. But...I need to look at a 686 and gp100 before i run and buy something.

I totally agree. The old Ruger 'Six' line was something very special.

I have read (probably on TFL, but who knows how accurate this is) that the Six series required quite a bit of handfitting.

So the move to the GP100/SP series were to modernize the design to eliminate the need for expensive gun smiths to handle each one.
